Obama spins magic, Clinton feels chill in New Hampshire
Anne Davies, Nashua, New Hampshire
January 7, 2008

HAD Democrat frontrunner Hillary Clinton seen the long queue for Barack Obama's rally at Nashua High School on Saturday, she might well have felt physically ill.

The line in this southern New Hampshire town snaked up a gentle incline and around a bend for more than a kilometre. Traffic was at a standstill as organisers scrambled to find extra parking away from the roadsides that are walled by snow banks of up to 1.5 metres after the state's snowiest December on record.

The organisers had planned for a crowd of 2200 in the school's spacious new gym. They organised an overflow room in the old gym just in case.

It soon became clear that those arrangements were inadequate for the 4000-plus crowd that turned out to see the man who defied the odds and won the first contest of the 2008 presidential elections.

Obama magic is sweeping New Hampshire. Even the jaded Washington press corps is amazed. One old-timer said he had never seen such turnouts — certainly not in 2004, when John Kerry was the great hope of the Democratic Party.

Marilyn Quail and her husband, Tom, came from Bedford, New Hampshire, to hear Senator Obama. "I am interested in Obama because he's generating so much excitement, and he does seem to give us hope that things can change after Bush," she said.

1. I think it's sad that..
.. possibly the first Black president
has had to swing so far right to get
elected.

Does anybody else see the terrible irony
in that?

3. Far right? Obama is a progressive
and I don't think there should be any doubt about it.

21. he wasn't my first choice, but he IS talking about removing torture
and reinstated habeas corpus and withdrawing the troops from Iraq.

those are all progressive positions, as far as I'm concerned.

I think we are witnessing some very very sour grapes by supporters of other candidates. The smear machine is in full tilt.

As I said, Obama wasn't my first choice, but he's growing on me. I would have liked to see Kucinich there, but hey, the world ain't perfect.

13. I think it's sad that small minded, bitter
twits make up bullshit lies about the man who could become the first black president. Do you see the irony in a progressive lying about a progressive candidate who happens to be black man?

15. Making shit up to advance your political agenda is sad and pathetic. . .
. . .do you wanna tell me how he has swung to the far right?

Does he want us to stay in Iraq?

Does he want to limit a woman's right to choose?

Does he want to provide more tax cuts to the rich?

Does he want to eliminate the IRS?

Does he want to pass a constitutional amendment against gay marriage?

Does he want to deport 12 million undocumented workers?

Tell me, do tell me how is swinging to the right.

19. Yes.

I think people some of the Obama people are so blinded by the shiny new idea...which I understand...but recognise the gravity of this election...Our country needs experienced, dedicated, fearless, commander in chief day one! No other candidate other than Hillary (IMO)has more real life/ real time experience.

Obama voted for President Bush's energy bill, top priorities - expanding Nafta to South America
Obama voted for President Bush's energy bill, increasing hardship for families
I wish one of his opponents would repeat these votes one after another in a speech:

Obama voted for President Bush's energy bill, sending more than $13 billion in subsidies and tax breaks to oil, coal, and nuclear companies. Obama voted with Republicans to allow credit card companies to raise interest rates over 30 percent, increasing hardship for families on the brink. Obama voted for one of President Bush's top priorities - expanding Nafta to South America - even as President Bush obstructed all the top Democratic priorities.

Obama voted with Bush to make it harder for ordinary people to hold big corporations accountable when they do things like sell toxic toys, poisonous pet food, or just plain rip you off.

Obama was the Senate's biggest Democratic advocate of subsidies for liquid coal, even though liquid coal produces twice the global warming pollution of the crude oil it's meant to replace (Obama "backed off" this position after being pummeled by environmentalists for several months, but still, along with Clinton, voted for increased subsidies, albeit with conditions).

That's what Obama's candidacy is all about. That's how you win elections.

Nothing wrong with that at all, in fact, there is everything right about it. ;)

14. Amazing
These pictures are one of the reasons the first thing I do every morning is log in to DU. I'll listen to the news later to hear the media spin, the experts that they think they are.

Thanks for going to the trouble of putting these up. They are the most memorable photos I know I will ever see.

20. The momentum factor
another thing that might be relevant is the fact that, as the original underdog Obama keeps coming up on top, it creates its own momentum and soon you will be getting a groundswell of Obama support, just because of the fact that the 'little guy' is finally able to project himself/herself into the aura of his campaign. Haven't seen anything like it in my life. I was disappointed at the thought of having to vote for Hillary or Edwards because they are recalcitrant warmongers.

I'd rather have an Obama who decides later to be the warmonger later, at least he stood his ground on the IWR when almost everyone else was pointing the guns at Iraq and pulling the triggers.

23. When the Dems win the WH, with independents joining to vote for a black man, is the
lunatic fringe on this board going to wail in misery. It is really sad. As for me, I am so happy about the political process, and millions like me are going to put O in the White House.
