He's not on the Louisiana ballot either, the Sec of State says the forms were filled out wrong (the SOS is the only Repub state office holder)

10. If it's any consolation, I mailed my California primary ballot with
Kucinich today. I plan to vote for Kerry in the general as I think he will get the nod, but felt Kucinich having the delegates wouldn't be a bad thing.

I get two votes..one for the message and one for the eviction notice on 1600.

Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 12:01 AM by nothingshocksmeanymo
is in Idaho. Where are those principled progressive voters who only want a progressive anti-war candidate? Why give votes to the guy that is OUT than to the guy that is still in? If principles aren't grounded in reason are they principles at all?

31. In the primaries vote for your candidate
It does not matter who it is, vote for them. If a majority of delegates is not received by anyone candidate, then it goes to a vote on the convention floor in June. If somebody picks up a majority in the primaries then the national convention becomes a coronation.

If there is not a clear winner by majority of DELEGATES, then it goes to a vote on the convention floor. It that is the case it is possible that Bush will win the Democratic convention if that is who the delegates vote for. If Kerry is going to do this, he needs to start picking up more than 50% of the vote and the delegates that go with it. This is where bad press will kill you, even if you have jomentum or anything else. If Kerry comes up with 2000 delegates and needs 2100+, even though he may win every state primary it still goes to a vote on the convention floor and people can change to another candidate. They could vote for Mickey Mouse, George Bush or Harry Truman at that point because they are no longer bound to the candidate that they went there for.

Here is a hypothetical for you: Kerry wins every state from here on out, but with less than 50%. He does not have the 2100+ delegates needed to be declared the Democratic nominee. It goes to a vote of the delegates at the convention and Howard Dean wins, he becomes the Democratic nominee. But for Dean to do this he would have to get delegates there and that has already occurred. The pledged delegates from the states that have already voted are committed to Dean unless it goes to a vote on the national convention floor then they can switch. So can Kerry's delegates, so can Edwards delegates, so can Kucinichs delegates.

Kerry if he is going to do this needs to start winning with big percentages, not 39% or 42%. He needs 50%+ or Dean may very well take it on a convention floor vote, that is why people still vote for Dean or Clark or Gephardt or Lieberman. Voting for your candidate will possible get one more delegate to the convention and one more person to try and win over others if it goes to a vote of the delegates at the national convention. Vote your candidate, not the horse race or bandwagon. That is the principle of it.

This is how I have had it explained to me and my understanding of it.

33. Oh please. The odds of Dean winning a brokered convention are about
as good as me winning the multi-state lottery. If he's got a fraction of the delegats Kerry does he is not goig to prevail.

And Kerry winning the remaining states by an average of 50% or more is not out of the question either.

34. The question was asked why vote your candidate
That is why. If your person has dropped out, then that is your last chance to get the person in office. He did not ask what the probability was of this happening. Although it is a slim chance for Lieberman, Gephardt, Clark or Dean at this point, it is a possibility at a brokered convention.

25. Utah Papers report
That todays democratic turnout was rather high and they ran out of the ballots so they were running on photocopies:

A Strong Turnout
Democrats Go to Polls in Utah, Hawaii, Idaho

By Patty Henetz
The Associated Press

S A L T L A K E C I T Y, Feb. 24 — Turnout for the Utah Democratic presidential primary exceeded projections and had party officials scrambling late today to print more ballots to accommodate the people who still want to vote, party chief Donald Dunn said.

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/Politics/US/utah_primary_040224-1.html

Though Utah is heavily conservative, Democrats in that state wanted to send a strong message that even in republican states, Democrats are going to turn out in record numbers against Bush.

26. Utah has passed 2000 turnout
With about 85% of precincts in, a little over 20,000 votes have been counted. While that doesn't sound like much, only 17,000 voted in 2000.

So I guess they will have to come up with some new rejoinders when I remind them of what a fiasco Dean's campaign was. They have an amusing habit of bringing up DK when he isn't even the topic in a Dean thread.
