I can't help but feeling warm and fuzzy that a black man won the Iowa caucus. We just saw history, folks.

One benefit to an Obama presidency: telling racist bastards that if they don't like America, they can LEAVE. :P

2. And on that note.. Two hispanic american men checked in and said
I don't see that happening and if it does it'll probably be short-lived. Exact words "I don't think America is ready for a black president".... Not that I care for Obama at all--think he's too corporate... but I said look he won in Iowa of all places so maybe he's got a chance.

3. You know, I don't care for Obama, but ...
I'll say this ... he's a constitutional scholar, and knows a whole lot about our system of government, unlike Chimpy and the Huckleberry.

I'm not trying to be smartass ... it just occurs to me that I do have a few things for which to be grateful.

:)

8. But, doesn't that just make it all about race - especially given you don't
'care for the guy', but cheer his win because he's a minority?

Sheez, when will this country get beyond color/gender/sexual preference?

Probably about the time the country abandons 'Intelligent Design'.

20. Sorry, when someone says they don't care for a candidate
but, that the fact that he won a caucus (in spite of his being black) has them feeling all warm and fuzzy ... give me a break! Even my daughter in law is laughing her ass off on this one -- and, yes, she is 'black'. Sheez, if I wanted to be so race/gender/sexual preference conscious, I'd have joined the GOP!

30. I just have a problem with the whole idea that any intelligent
human being can still consider some ridiculous criteria/ideas to be relevant in this day and age ... race, gender, sexual "orientation", that evolution is not science or there is an iota of scientific support for 'Intelligent Design', America is a Christian Nation, etc ... all the illogical, unscientific (aka racist/sexist/dumb ass religious crap) that keeps the country/world from moving forward, in a progressive way, just rubs me the wrong way.

16. No, it doesn't make it all about race
Here's the thing. Obama winning here shows that it's possible. It gets people used to the idea of seeing someone other than the status quo in leadership roles.

It opens the door for people of all colors and backgrounds, of diverse views. This is why I can be excited about an Obama win, despite not being thrilled with with the way he handles things.

PS: It's called sexual orientation, "preferences" are for shoes and hamburger condiments, please.

not like some noose hung around their necks -- they actually PREFER their sexual 'orientation'.

Yeah, we have a VERY diverse family -- and, we appreciate every member and the unique perspectives, experiences, and ideas they contribute to the family unit.

31. It may be 'fun' for you, but I have to live with the bigotry and
prejudice ... in a RED county in the Midwest. And, trust me, having to witness/defend your family as they are subjected to this type of hatred is extremely painful.

32. I feel sorry for your family.
Honestly, I do. No one should have to go through that--as someone who's lived through a dyke bashing, was the victim of a racial incident at school that nearly got me expelled, and nearly got kicked out of the house over religion, I understand the pain of being different. It's terrible.

But I think you need to understand that I, and many racial and sexual minorities find it patently offensive when hetero white folks break out their "black friends" etc in an attempt to silence us. That is straight out of Black People Love Us and it's not cool. Minorities don't all think, act or feel the same way about things. If that were the case, there wouldn't be Log Cabin Republicans or Jack and Jill.

I think you're trying to pick a fight where one doesn't exist, as BB said upthread. This was intended to be a positive thread and I don't have any animosity toward you. If you can't see the point I was trying to make in my OP, that's fine.

34. And, all I'm saying is that until the supposedly 'enlightened' people
Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 11:40 PM by sjdnb
see beyond race/gender/sexual preference/orientation ... how can they expect anyone else to.

So, when you say, you're glad Obama won even though you don't 'care for him' that is only magnifying race as a sort of 'litmus test' for approval/disapproval. Whereas, I would purport that race/gender/sexual preference/orientation is irrelevant -- only what the person stands for and their ideas matter.

And, btw, it's not some sort of weird family I made up for the occasion -- I wish they'd never have to be subjected to the prejudices they have been - but, I love every one of them and wouldn't trade them for all the 'tea in China'.

And, actually, I'm very proud to have raised such an open-minded, diverse, and fearless bunch of individuals.

9. I am thrilled-THRILLED- that a person of color won a major state caucus.
You know he is not my candidate either and for why, but I am awash in a sense of hope for our country. Not Obama-hope, but hope that things are going to be possible for ALL of us.

18. Amen.
I've been following this at work, since I work evenings, and I was emailing back and forth with my mom about it. She said my great aunt, who is 90 years old and has lived in the South all her life, started to cry when she heard Obama won. "Maybe there is a chance for us", she said.

This is bigger than candidates.
