LG David Paterson In Iowa For Clinton, Predicts Clinton Victory

LG David Paterson, who has been in Iowa campaigning for Hillary Clinton since New Year’s Eve, said he feels the tide is turning in her favor there and predicted she’ll surprise everyone by winning the caucuses tomorrow night, adding: “It might not be as close as you might think.”

Paterson, who is considered a leading candidate to be tapped by Gov. Eliot Spitzer to replace Clinton if she wins, is on his third trip to Iowa as a Clinton surrogate. He has been working to rally the small number of African American voters in the state (he put the number at about 2 percent of the electorate) - a task he admitted is a difficult one, given the popularity of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, who benefits from the fact that Iowa is so close to his home state’s media market.

Paterson said he is scheduled to do an event in Des Moines with Clinton this evening, talking to voters who are still undecided.

He spent New Year’s Eve at a Watch Night ceremony (an African American tradition linked to waiting for the enactment of the Jan. 1, 1863 Emancipation Proclamation) hosted by five black churchs in Des Moines. A representative from Obama’s campaign was also present, Paterson said.

Paterson said he kept his remarks historical in nature, noting that “the emancipation of African Americans in this country could not have happened without the very honorable white citizens and white people in government who fought for it.”

“I brought it down to people like Hillary Clinton, who I see as someone who has dedicated her life to the service of others,” Paterson said.
