Economists are endorsing Edwards. Hurrah! These are the smartest guys.
Economists pick Edwards because he will fight for sustained growth, full employment and an end to poverty

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Today, the John Edwards for President campaign announced that more than 30 leading U.S. economists have endorsed John Edwards for president. "Economists for John Edwards" includes such notable scholars as James K. Galbraith from the University of Texas at Austin; Deirdre McCloskey from the University of Illinois at Chicago; Thomas Palley, founder of the Economics for Democratic & Open Societies Project; Clyde Prestowitz, president of the Economic Strategies Institute; Harley Shaiken from the University of California, Berkeley; and Edward Wolff from New York University.

"I'm proud to endorse John Edwards and his campaign to build One America.," said James Galbraith, the Lloyd M. Bentsen, Jr. Chair in Government/Business Relations at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, University of Texas at Austin. "Edwards understands that in order for America to prosper, our economy needs to reward work as well as wealth – and he's proposed detailed and comprehensive policies to address the growing income gap, the health care crisis, job loss and the other critical social issues facing our nation."

"I am honored to have earned the support of this distinguished group of economists," said Senator Edwards. "Today, families across the country are working harder than ever, but struggling to make ends meet. To help middle-class families get ahead, we need a president who will fight for universal health care, smarter trade policies and a new energy economy."

In their endorsement of Edwards, the "Economists for Edwards" signed on to the following statement:

"As professional economists, we support John Edwards for President of the United States in 2008 because we believe that John Edwards has best demonstrated the capacity and the policies to be the next president of the United States.

"We support John Edwards because we believe his campaign is the single best expression of progressive political values in American politics today.

"We support John Edwards because we believe that as president he will best wage the hard fight that lies ahead for the principles and programs we endorse.

"We support John Edwards because as economists, we seek effective public policy aimed at sustained growth, full employment, an end to poverty, and progress toward solving the major social and environmental problems associated with health care, education, trade, taxation and climate change.

"John Edwards' approach to these issues has been uniquely serious, honest, and far-reaching. We urge all Americans – and particularly the Democratic voters of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina - to join us in supporting John Edwards for president."

A complete list of the members of "Economists for Edwards" is included below.

1. Wouldn't it be something to restore the economy,
and bring the debt back down (remember the Clinton years, anyone?)

I love this quote:

"Edwards understands that in order for America to prosper, our economy needs to reward work as well as wealth – and he's proposed detailed and comprehensive policies to address the growing income gap, the health care crisis, job loss and the other critical social issues facing our nation."

28. I Feel As You Do.... But Just Think How This Could Play Out? It's Still
early and if these people have faith in Edwards, the WORD most assuredly will travel!!

This is tremendous GOOD NEWS for Edwards!! I'm very impressed myself because it means that "they" have been listening, and "they" have decided that those who have called him an "angry" candidate is actually a man on a mission, for the people of America!

Sometimes you just have to HOLLER to get their attention!

45. Many & I Mean Many Have Counted Him Out & I Have Felt That A
certain message was instigated and sent out that he was possibly a real threat to upsetting the "apple-cart" of what has become the tone of Washington Elites AND many in power who have benefited from the climate that has evolved over the last decade.

Early on all we heard was Clinton had it wrapped up, that she was campaigning as if she was already running her GE campaign. Then some cracks began to show, so it was on to Obama and the horse race between them was on. As time has passed, while Edwards has always been "mentioned" as one of the top three, he got just enough attention to keep him in play. Soon the squabbling between Clinton & Obama began to heat up and Clinton's star began to dim. In the past week or so, Obama seems to have turned much more to the right and has made comments that have made even me begin to wonder about him. I have always stated that I liked him, but didn't think it was his time... now from what I've been seeing and hearing him say, I wonder if his "change/unity" message has him leaning even more to the right.

So perhaps some who have been standing on the sidelines have seen these shifts too and made the decision that perhaps the "angry" (so the say) candidate just might have the grit and fire in his belly to accomplish something different and something that could start a movement to correct some of what this country has lost. It MIGHT be too late for Iowa, but I'm not sure he won't win anyway... but if he keeps getting these kinds of groups behind him, the D.C. Elites just might have a fight on their hands.

I'm not predicting anything, but I am seeing that he is getting respect from people who don't just throw money around for a favor in return. Most of his endorsements have come from people who have been activists and in the trenches for years and years. Many who get recognition, but don't always get star-studded recognition with bells & whistles. It's like they are testing the water now and it might feel that the water really is fine.

It's late and my mind is full of theories that pop into my head. Still, theories that could be possible.

Endorsements that really mean something! It's always nice to have some celebrities on your side, but this is the kind of endorsmentst that have real meaning. Our economy is going to tank if we don't do something, and for these men to back Edwards, really shows that he has the right plan to tackle the "real" problems that the people of this country face!

14. This endorsement is especially meaningful because
it is not being bartered for anything. These guys do not have to endorse anyone, and they won't get anything for endorsing Edwards -- not special spots, nothing. They already have their credentials. None of the other candidates will refuse to consult with them just because they endorsed Edwards.

This endorsement means a lot.

22. Interesting article by Robert Pollin on Clintonomics...
Clintonomics: A Reappraisal. The Hollow Boom
By ROBERT POLLIN

"It's the economy stupid," was the one memorable slogan to have emerged out of Bill Clinton's successful first run at the Presidency in 1992, and it became the overarching theme of his full eight years in office. Clinton came into office pledging to end the economic stagnation that that had enveloped the last two years of the Bush-1 administration and advance a program of "Putting People First" through large investments in job training, education, and rebuilding the country's public infrastructure.

But Clinton's economic program changed drastically even during the two-month interregnum between his November election and his inauguration in January 1993, as Bob Woodward of the Washington Post documented in compelling detail in his first Washington insider book on economic policy, The Agenda. As reported by Woodward, Clinton himself acknowledged only weeks after winning the election that "We're Eisenhower Republicans here.We stand for lower deficits, free trade, and the bond market. Isn't that great?" Clinton further conceded during this same time period that with his new policy focus "we help the bond market and we hurt the people who voted us in."

Clinton never abandoned the idea that "it's the economy stupid" should remain the watchwords of his Presidency. It was just that the "Putting People First" agenda of his 1992 campaign would have to yield top priority to the prerogatives of the financial markets and the wealthy. How could Clinton have undergone such a lightening reversal from the program on which he was elected to office? The answer was straightforward, and explained with unvarnished candor by Robert Rubin, who had been Co-Chair of the premier Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs before joining the Clinton administration and who was to become Clinton's most influential economic advisor and Treasury Secretary. Still during the interregnum before Clinton's first inauguration, Rubin pointed out to members of the more populist camp within the newly forming administration that the rich "are running the economy and make the decisions about the economy."

30. Clinton's experience is not lost on Edwards.
He has already stated that, with, if I remember correctly, one exception regarding a hypothetical solution to a problem that has not yet arisen, he will try to state how he will pay for a program before proposing it.

I have to admit, I am not a passionate Edwards supporter - I only just decided to caucus for him within the past week or two and I'm still a bit waffly about that - but tomorrow's the day and I will be standing in his corner.

I will be a first-time caucus goer, so I'm very excited to go and learn about the whole process and am very anxious to hear the outcome!

Welcome, again - and be sure to stop in on the Iowa forum, as well! :hi:

43. Is it too much to dream?
Will the distractions of gender and race on the Democratic side and the empty rhetoric on the Republican side outweigh the common sense of the John Edwards campaign? As a gay, black male I would give anything to be able to vote for either Clinton or Obama in good conscious, but I can't. To be honest, if I thought either of them were even half the candidate of John Edwards, then I would grit my teeth and vote for either of them. But not only did they campaign for Lieberman, John Edwards did not, but they also share Lieberman's perspective on "bipartisanship." They talk tough, but they are weak.

and is just some of what we need to be seeing in an elected official. fiscal common sense.

I hope this gets reported widely in the MSM...:eyes: it probably won't...

I am also Disappointed to not see a professor from the U of Michigan on this list, although I shouldn't be too surprised I guess.

I love the sound of rationality in the morning.

In fact, I'll one-up that commie talk by saying that our economy needs to reward work *with* wealth, and let wealth without work go take a hike.
