Hillary: Caucusing Isn't Easy — For Women
By Eric Kleefeld - January 2, 2008, 10:59AM

During an interview shown this morning on the Today Show, Hillary Clinton made an interesting claim about the peculiarities of the caucus system — that it's socially more difficult for women voters:

"They would rather just keep their vote to themselves," Hillary said. NBC then followed this with Meredith Vieira's narration that Hillary's campaign had previously carried an air of inevitability — perhaps a subtle commentary that Hillary is trying to massage expectations against a possible caucus loss.

4. I reposted this over in the Iowa Forum in order to ask our 'little women'
if they agree with Hillary Clinton. I have an idea what the response will be. :eyes:

What's going on in Iowa?

13. Bedlum!

There is no difference in male/female support - a strong supporter or an eager caucus-goer are just that - gender holds no difference.

14. Sorry, I mean in general.
Besides this male/female BS. Is it really bedlum? Do you have a sense of what's going to happen?

19. No, I don't, sorry.
I still think Edwards will come out on top b/c his supporters are for the most part loyal and have caucused for him in the past.

I also think Biden will do better than expected b/c the folks attending his events are more consistent caucus attendees.

Obama/Clinton are bringing in the 'rubber-neckers' and newly energized voters. I can tell you if that will translate into caucus-goers. It didn't work for Dean and Kucinich in 2004.

I would love to see 200,000 Democrats caucus - it means new Democrats and new central committee members and new volunteers and contributors and a new pool of folks to go to for County/District/Statewide offices come the 2008 elections and beyond.

Not much help am I?

2. Sooo...Is Senator Clinton hinting that if she doesn't win Iowa...
it will be because the women of Iowa weren't able to speak their minds? Because that's what is SOUNDS like she's saying. I think Senator Clinton would be pleased at how the women of Iowa conduct themselves at caucus, and that her worries are unfounded...still I'd like to see the ENTIRE piece, rather than just that little blurb. Context you know, is everything.

5. What's the issue?
I've always heard of midwestern reserve. Is there any truth to it? Are women more reserved than men? And yes, I'm sure all the candidates are preparing in the event they come in first, second, or third. I guarantee whoever wins or loses will spin the results as best they can.

8. That's pathetic.
The one thing I remember from 2004 was the female Dean supporter working her ass off, and the female Clark supporter at a caucus in a small house or restaurant.

Edited on Wed Jan-02-08 12:59 PM by hedda_foil
Sounds like her strategy of going after the little old Democratic ladies who've never caucused before, (married to Dem or Indie men), is failing despite the offers of free mugs, pre-caucus buffets and snow shoveling. If there's one type of female voter who is likely to be intimidated about speaking up -- to the point of staying away in the end -- it's this demographic.

27. Sadly, many of you may be too young to remember or you don't know,
many older women grew up in a time when women did not speak out and were called out or shut up if they did.

Old habits and attitudes are hard to overcome by both....men & women.

Women have not "always" had the advantages & rights that most enjoy now.

Some of our grandmothers fought for the Right for us to vote. It hasn't been that long ago.

Also, some of these replies smell of the old "Double Standard."

Michelle O. can tell people "Do not be afraid to stand up and be counted."

Hillary can't ?
