Minorities less likely to get pain relief-US study
CHICAGO, Jan 1 (Reuters) - Black and Hispanic patients in pain are less likely than whites to get powerful painkillers from U.S. hospital emergency departments, but the reasons may go beyond sheer racial bias, researchers said on Tuesday.

In a look at 375,000 emergency room visits over 13 years, a study found 31 percent of whites in pain received opioid drugs -- a broad class of narcotic painkillers dispensed only by prescription -- compared to 23 percent of blacks and 24 percent of Hispanics.

In contrast, 36 percent of minority patients received less-potent, non-opioid pain relievers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen during emergency room visits, compared to 26 percent of white patients.

6. I take offence at your racist remark against white people.
How about apologizing for it now.

7. I sorry i said that
I am white myself. I just think that there is a shortage of real toughness in this country. Any pain at all is seen as unacceptible and must be driven away by medication. I turn down pain medication myself. I have been to the ER 5 times in the last two years.

8. Thank you for the apology. Its important to drive the point home
that slurs against whites are racial slurs and will not be tolerated.

2. Doesn't the US Census Bureau classify Hispanics as caucasians? On edit add:
Edited on Tue Jan-01-08 08:01 PM by jody
"The revised standards will have five minimum categories for data on race: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and White. There will be two categories for data on ethnicity: 'Hispanic or Latino' and 'Not Hispanic or Latino.'"

3. Good, kinda
I wish they would reduce giving out pain killers across the board. After my knee replacement surgery I was given "knock you the fk out" meds that I only took once. Not claiming to be Rambo but I dealt with the pain and I think knowing when it really hurt prevented me from overexerting myself.

4. Huh?
What do you mean by "good, kinda"?

Do you think that racial discrimination is kinda good, or do you think that you have the power to access everyones medical condition without seeing them. Both? I feel that your knee injury does not qualify you to know everyones needs.
