Not all Nader supporters are Democrats.
I know one Republican who describes himself as a "Green Republican". He is against both big government and big business control over people's lives. However, he is against abortion and is against gun control. So he volunteers for environmental efforts in his local Green party but still sees himself as a Republican -- sounds like Teddy Roosevelt.

So maybe some of the votes going to Nader will be from anti-establishment Republicans. In this sense, voting for Nader helps to send a clear message that multinational business control as well as excessive government are not what people want. They want more local control, more democracy and a greater voice in their affairs. So I really don't see a vote for Nader as wasted and I don't see his running as really hurting the Democratic nominee.

18. Quite a few Libertarians supported Nader in 2000...
The ones I met ALWAYS voted third party, apparently Reason magazine endorsed voting for Nader as a way to grow a third party other than the Libertarians. These are not people who would ever vote democrat.

I frankly grow tired of people shouting that Nader stole votes from the democrats. Just like Perot, Nader attracts people who NEVER vote. There were Perot voters who never voted, and stopped voting after he stopped running. Half of this country NEVER votes...why not scream at them for not voting democrat?

17. Unless there's a remarkable coincidence...
... at work here and Pontus' friend is my best friend's father -- also a republican and a Green Party supporter in 2000 (was appalled that Bush won the primaries, saw a need for environmental and electoral reform), then there are indeed other "Green Republicans," and they're quite sincere. They don't exist in significant enough numbers to tip an election away from the GOP, but since there's nothing intrinsically inconsistent about being a supply-sider and being pro-environment, there's no reason to assume they're not real.

3. He must be one conflicted dude. The assault on the environment
by Republicans must have his head spinning. The Big Government and Big Business control, too. Sounds like he's down to being an Abortion Republican with this administration. :-)

4. IIRC

40%-50% of the Green vote came from Arab-Americans, a large portion of which aren't politically assimilated to mainstream society to any significant extent.

Your semi-libertarian friend is probably easiest to think of as casting a protest vote.

5. Lets review.
If you vote for Nadir, you are not a Democrat. Democrats vote for Democrats. Is that simple enough? You might be anything,Republican,Green,Independent, etc. However, you are not a Democrat.

6. Then by your logic...
this election is a big waste since only 1/3 of Americans identify as Democrats. Democrats can't win if everyone has to vote by party affiliation. Last I saw, there are more people who are Republican than Democrat. Your logic doesn't make sense.

7. He'll have to be on the ballots to get all 3 anti-establishment GOP votes
Sorry, but I don't see this as a very large constituency.

And I'm afraid that wasting a vote on a guy who could only muster 2.7% of the vote in 2000 isn't going to send a clear message to anyone anywhere.

Nader has a very *steep* uphill battle to even get on the ballots this year. Hopefully, he won't.

10. i can remember the days when du was a civil place.
People might disagree but they didn't call each other "retarded". And by the way that is now "mentally challenged".

Carlos hated nader, but he always remained polite.

16. Independent types
who lean Libertarian - (not so much free-market libertarians but the live and-let-live lifestyle types)seem to appreciate Nader this time around. At least, that has been my experience based on feedback.
