We need to drive on the left side of the road
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 10:11 PM by WillyBrandt
I've decided that Americans need to drive on the left side of the road. Americans are sick and bored of driving on the right side of the road; after decades, they are ready for a change. They can get Japanese cars right from the Land of the Rising Sun, and English cars without modifications.

Now, there are two ways I can go about effecting this change:

The first is to effect a change in our legal rules to make the left side the official side to drive on. This fact will then be publicized, and on one official date we'll be driving on the left side. Having changed the rules of the game first, effecting the substantial change itself is both easy and safe. The downside is that this takes a lot of thankless work, and who knows if it'll work?

The second is to rail against the current rules and system, and threaten to drive on the left side of the road no matter what. If people call me nuts, that exposes their intolerance of a superior method of driving, not my own rejection of reality. (The fools: they may pay me scorn, but they also pay me attention.) Anyway, I think the only way to get real change is to just to start changing my behavior, regardless of the rules of the game; if people get hurt in the process, that's the rules' fault, not my own. Fuck em. As for me: I've got airbags.

I haven't decided just what I'm going to do. But I'm starting to get annoyed with a lot of the right-side-of-the-road drivers here on DU, so I think sometime in the future--maybe around November--I'll hop on the left side of the road and drive as fast as I can.

(Edit: Changed "girls" to "cars." Freudian slips.)

"The fools: they may pay me scorn, but they also pay me attention!"

That is a very large part of the matter in a nutshell, Sir. At its bottom, this thing is not a quarrel over political issues, but personality issues. Some people pride themselves on being more perceptive than the common run, and then complain the herd cannot see they are its proper leaders, and that in fact, the herd is barely aware that they exist at all.

"Who cannot obey cannot command."

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"
