I used to think the Iowa caucus process was a quirky, anachronistic throwback to primitive times when we had 13 states and a voting population of - what, a couple thousand?
I am coming to understand, though, that it really is what our Constitution intended. It is We the People striving to make a reasoned decision about who should lead in our representative democracy.
That the crowds keep turning out to hear all the candidates is impressive, particulaly with all the distractions this time of year. That they turn out for other than the "top tier" is even more impressive. The recent article about a group at a Biden event really impressed me. He stopped himself when starting to lecture on the Constitution and government and said "this is boring;" they said "no its not" and wanted him to go on! I love you Iowa! Now don't let me down. Don't let all those corporatists con you into abdicating your authority. Do your own due diligence. The other candidates have repeatedly said "Joe is right..." and "I agree with Joe...". Joe has formulated a plan for a political solution in Iraq. Whether it is perfect or not is immaterial - he is the only so-called "leader" who has seen the need and given it a try! And a lot of senators agreed with it, once they heard him patiently explain it. A lot of world leaders agree with it.
Joe can snap his fingers and summon world leaders to Geneva or some other neutral location and lead a conference whose theme will be "ok, now how do we fix this mess?"
There may well not be anyone else on the planet with the international credibility to do that.
We need Joe Biden!
Iowa, you are proud of the tradition in which your caucus goes first. But do you want to lead, or follow? Do you want to tell the rest of the country "hold on a minute; we checked them out and separated snake oil from substance - give this guy a look." Or do you want to simply place a bet at a roulette wheel, try to predict which one will win in the other states, so you can look like one of the crowd, rather than actually
leading the process?
Continue to do your fact-finding; continue to listen to Edwards, Dodd, Biden, Kucinich, Richardson, as well as Clinton and Obama. Decide who YOU want leading the country come 2008. Not who you THINK is going to be nominated, but who you WANT nominated.
If you can't get out to see/hear Joe, take a look at some of these videos:
