Getting To Know Hillary's Defensive Side
When somebody tells you the same thing three or four times, it may be something that you're supposed to understand is very important. When somebody tells you the same thing more than 30 times in a row, though, it means you probably already think the opposite is true -- and it's a good idea to figure out what exactly the message is, and why it's being hammered into your brain.

Senator Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign's new site, The Hillary I Know, features dozens of short video testimonials to Senator Clinton as a person. (The campaign has been blanketing liberal blogs with ads for the site.) The men and women featured in the interviews are her constituents, her co-workers, her associates from church, her mom, and, on the first page, "very close friend" Jim Blair. If that name rings a bell, perhaps it's because he was the Tyson attorney who helped her turn $1000 into $100,000 in ten months close to three decades ago.

snip

Several endorsers talk about how Senator Clinton's interventions in health care-related matters saved them or people close to them; several talk about her strong religious convictions. Nobody talks about her actual policies (although a few mention that she's got policies in mind) -- the point is just for "those who know her best," as the site says, to act as character witnesses for her. But you don't generally need character witnesses unless you've been accused of something. What's she being accused of?

1. The "happy horseshit" campaign.
That's a good thing, isn't it?

Don't bash me, I'm being positive.

33. C'mon. She wants to be our pals.
"Let's chat" she says. Isn't that as good as being invited to a barbecue, or out for a beer?

Oh, zidzi...PLEASE say you want to chat with Hillary, oh please do.

on Feb. 1, 2009 - as my senator - does that count?

37. It does.
Say, didn't she promise she was going to see out her term as Senator during her senatorial campaign? I recall her saying she wouldn't go off and run for pres.

40. Still, I bet she's good at chatting.
And that's pretty important. That's something.

Maybe it's just plain stupid NOT to vote for such an eager, personable chatter? Gosh. I don't want anyone to think I'm stupid. Hmmm...or TOO stupid, anyway.

Hmmm. Maybe I better vote for Hillary. It seems to make us all smarter somehow. I'm just not sure how it works, but then, once I vote for Hillary I guess I'll be smart enough to figure it out.

So I'm definitely voting for Hillary. Just as soon as she sends me one of those scratch 'n sniff cards from Iowa I've been hearing about.

46. No, no, don't do that, I like you dumb!
um er....I mean I like you just the way you are. And I don't think she's all that good at chatting - I just read a book about the Clinton years written by a pretty unbiased source. She's not at all personable, either - except, I think, to her family and close friends, plus maybe she hates cats - I bet she does!

I don't know anything about the scratch 'n sniff cards, dammit - now I'm even angrier at "lil dog", and I will NOT vote for her, unless I absolutely have to .

Honeypot, you are SO much smarter than the average Hillary supporter - don't go changin' to try to please them....

52. I'm pretty sure that's a rumor
that you just started, or I might have started it, but it is true that once she moved to NY, you never heard a word about Socks, so it could be. I have two words for someone like that, but I'm just not gonna type them - I'm so mad at her right now for possibly doing that!

secretary, Betty Currie. Or maybe a local restaurant. I can't remember which.

54. Betty did get lots of stuff from them
so it was probably her - and I'm sure she's caring for him well, although I think it was Hil's idea to just ditch the cat like that.

I'm sure it wasn't a restaurant - I don't for a minute believe the things they say about Chinese restaurants, although I did stop eating chicken chow mein and started getting veggie - just because it's healthier, not at all because there was something odd about the chicken....

41. Hey Kurovski, when I met hillary on
May 24, 2001..she lied to me. Straight up. I tried to rationalize it but it stuck with me all these years..I wonder why?

Someone introduced her to me as part of the Democratic Party in our town and she said, "Nice to see you again!". I said, "I've never met you before but I've been watching you on tv for a couple of years:) hillary said.."Thank you!" OMG, GAG.

Now, having watched her on DU for 5 years.. I don't think she's worthy to be in any higher position.

Let someone chat with hillary who doesn't feel bamboozled by her.

2. I've heard her say 20 times that she's a "proven leader" or
a "strong leader". The last politician who felt compelled to constantly remind us what a strong leader he was, was of course the boy king. And we all know how THAT turned out.

So I'm a bit skeptical that Hillary is a "strong leader". And as far as "proven" I've really yet to see her lead anything of consequence.

I'll support her if she is nominated. But I'd sure love to see Edwards or Dodd be our candidate.

5. seems kind of silly criticism to me.
all campaigns say the same thing over and over again- hammering on certain points consistently to forge the message they want heard. And they don't just do it 30x; they do it hundreds if not thousands of times over the course of the campaign. And anyone with half a brain knows she's being accused of everything under the sun- the Chris Mattews show transcript is evidence of that. The author's dislike of Clinton couldn't be clearer. It's not analysis, it's snark.

10. this part here
i thought it was funny-

The subtext is clear: Hillary is so terrifyingly warm she could broil you alive. No, wait: it's that her public persona gives off a chill that could freeze steam in midair, and that despite her years in public life, she seems impossible to know -- which seems to be even more unacceptable for a woman running for president than for a man. (It didn't do Al Gore a lot of good.) So the way to sway undecided primary voters is apparently to provide anecdotal, one-person-at-a-time evidence that she's interacted with non-robots. Even her mom thinks she's a sweetheart! The name of the site itself gives the game away (at the top of the page, "The" and "I Know" are in a handwriting-style font; "Hillary" is her campaign logo, underscored by a simplified waving flag with three stars and three stripes). The formulation "The ________ I know" is almost always used to contradict an accusation: "The Dr. Evil I know would never try to take over the world!"

19. I am simply amazed at how some people are willing to lie
and then accuse others of lacking character. I went to the site, and listened to three videos. All three discussed issues. Wes Clark's Iraq and Iran, Maria Echaveste adoption and providing opportunity for college, AnnMarie Moorse passing a law making insurance companies continue to cover students who get too sick to remain students. No, I didn't listen to every single video, nor do I claim that my sample was honestly random, but just how dishonest can a reporter be?

42. u r irrelevant...is is obama...
obama is a zero compared to Hillary and her life time of dedication to so many issues that DO matter to Americans. Her history of working for women's and children's rights all over the world for most of her adult life is most exemplary. Many are not aware of her voting record... that she does not support the corporate agenda, as many in the left blogosphere would have us believe

Ambassador Wilson,General Clark, and RFK, as well as Unions support her as well.

45. The entire marketing spin of the site is to "prove" Hillary is not an awful person
Like the OP says, why is this even an issue? After watching a few of these "testimonials", it leaves me wondering who thought of the idea, and frankly, how does Hillary feel about the need to prove she has a heart.
