2006: Obama endorses Lieberman
I support Obama, but let's not pretend he's anything other than a mainstream politician. He may have some idealism left, but he's pragmatic, too:

http://www.talkleft.com/story/2006/04/02/164/90446

"I know that some in the party have differences with Joe," Senator Obama said, all but silencing the crowd. "I'm going to go ahead and say it. It's the elephant in the room. And Joe and I don't agree on everything. But what I know is, Joe Lieberman's a man with a good heart, with a keen intellect, who cares about the working families of America."

Then, with applause beginning to build, he finished the thought: "I am absolutely certain that Connecticut's going to have the good sense to send Joe Lieberman back to the United States Senate." That time, people cheered loudly.

It's not like there's been a running thread on this all last week with over 200 comments.

Did Lieberman endorse Obama or something?

... I'm just so tired of the way supporters try to turn their candidates into saints. They're not. They're all roughly the same sort of ambitious opportunists, as they probably need to be.

4. ONLY in the Primary
Then he backed the Democratic candidate.

Although true as far as it goes, this subject line is inflammatory.

(And I'm not an Obama supporter.)

Lamont Gets Help From Obama

By ANDREW MIGA

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, a vocal defender of Sen. Joe Lieberman earlier this year, is urging Connecticut voters to rally behind his rival, Ned Lamont.

The Illinois senator and potential 2008 presidential candidate sent an e-mail message Thursday praising Lamont.

"Ned Lamont has waged an impressive grass-roots campaign to give the people of Connecticut a choice in the November Senate election," Obama wrote. "Please join me in supporting Ned Lamont with your hard work on-the-ground in these closing weeks of the campaign."

The Lamont campaign said Obama's e-mail went to about 5,000 Connecticut residents.

Lamont aides said they welcomed the support of Obama, who has enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent weeks as speculation about his national ambitions mounts. Obama has also given $5,000 to Lamont's campaign through a political committee.

13. And gave money
It would be good to see what the other Dems did. Some did campaign for him, many other didn't although they did endorse him.

14. This was in the primaries only - just like HRC and BC and most Democrats
In fact, much was made of the fact that Kerry and Feingold explicitly refused to endorse him in the primaries, as it is atypical not to do so.

That said, Obama's support was tepid compared to Bill Clinton's. Bill Clinton attended a huge rally for Leiberman right before the primary and Clinton did a better job praising Leiberman as the best choice than I have ever heard him give for anyone - oddly including not just Gore and Kerry, but when he speaks of HRC. He also recorded robo calls that were used. The primary was in August. BC did nothing for Lamont and HRC just did a NY based fund raiser and gave him Wolfson. It is hard to believe that Clinton's powerful endorsement in August did not play a role in November.
