Sorry, Senator. I just don't agree.

Well, it does happen. Not frequently, but once in a while the Senator says something that I just can't get behind. Yesterday was one such time. You won't find it in his prepared remarks, but at the end of yesterday's speech at Johns Hopkins University's Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), he said:

"Some of this is dry. It's not exactly the speech of stumps in a political campaign ..."

Well, that's true enough, Senator. It's not what we're hearing from the candidates. But have you listened to a Republican stump speech lately? Mostly devoid of meaningful content, often flat-out stupid. None worth listening to all the way through. So I'm afraid I just have to call you on the 'dry' remark, as I find real foreign policy strategy fascinating. Honestly, I wish the candidates would talk about meaningful issues instead of treating the campaign like a bad reality show, but I don't see it happening.

Anyway, that was the part I disagree with. Here's the rest:

Listen here or at SAIS

Transcript of remarks as prepared

If you scroll down to the bottom of the SAIS homepage, there's also audio from JK's June ASP speech.

This isn't the first time Senator Kerry has made Afghanistan the focus of a major speech. He spoke on the problems in Afghanistan September, 9 2006 at Faneuil Hall, and introduced legislation this past July to urge the Congress and the administration to refocus our efforts. Senator Kerry and others who understand the real threat of ignoring the situation in Afghanistan have been urging action for years, but without any real diplomatic effort by the Bush administration, the situation is worsening. Bush lied us into Iraq and then turned his attention to the false threat of nuclear weapons in Iran. Maybe he should just listen this time.

5. From the questions he was asked,
the audience did not agree with the "dry" statement either. The questions were serious and very thoughtful and were in regard to things he said.

The best part of both the speech and the answers to questions was when he spoke of the need to enable Afghanistan (and the West Bank - in an answer) to develop the institutions and ways to provide service that are needed in all societies - so the society can offer its people decent lives. There he spoke with passion.

2. Same here - Give me a Kerry or Gore detailed policy speech any day.
The corporate media was charged with dumbing down American public long ago. They repeatedly tell Americans what they want and don't want to hear and then go about their own storylines.

7. Then why is Bush our president?
Many Americans don't like smart people. I have a suspicion that Huckabee might win the primaries because Giuliani and Romney and probably McCain just seem to intelligent for ordinary Republicans.

You and I and other DUers know better because we're Democrats, we value education, and we want a smart president, that's why we nominated John Kerry, Al Gore, and Bill Clinton. In fact, that's why I'm supporting Biden. His policies are comprehensive, realistic, and they make sense.
