Clinton attack ad tied to Edwards supporter

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A fellow Democrat who was connected with John Edwards' presidential campaign is attacking Hillary Clinton in a new television ad he says will air later this week in the early voting state of Iowa. The ad accuses the New York Democratic senator of folding to Republican pressure and will run on Iowa cable, according to Glenn Hurowitz, co-founder and president of Democratic Courage, the newly-formed political action committee that created the spot.

Hurowitz, an environmental activist, was listed as a “National Environmentalists for Edwards Leader” in an official press release sent out by the Edwards campaign earlier this fall, which described him as “principal” of Democratic Courage. He said in an interview Tuesday that he is no longer connected with the former North Carolina senator’s campaign in any way. Hurowitz, along with fellow Democratic Courage founder Sam Goldman, has also donated to the Edwards campaign several times this election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission records....Dan Leistikow, an Edwards’ spokesman, denied that the campaign had any knowledge of Hurowitz’s activities. “He is acting completely independent of the Edwards campaign,” Leistikow said. “We have had absolutely no contact or involvement with him since we learned of his activities outside of our campaign.”...

...it is not clear how much money Hurowitz is putting behind the ad – information he refuses to disclose. He is actively soliciting donations on his Web site to help pay for it. “Democratic Courage is dedicated to electing a progressive, courageous, and winning Democratic presidential candidate,” Hurowitz writes to prospective donors. “Unfortunately, Hillary Clinton has fallen short on that standard… We need your help to get this message out to Iowa voters today.” In the interview, Hurowitz acknowledged that his newly formed political action committee was created late enough in the campaign cycle that it does not have to release the names of its donors to the FEC until January 30, weeks after voters in the early states of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina have already cast their ballots. He added that his group hopes to expand its targets beyond Clinton to other Democratic candidates, and to air positive ads for a contender that shared their vision.

Hurowitz has been an active contributor over the past year on Daily Kos, the progressive online political forum, where he has created "diaries" praising Edwards and bashing Clinton and Obama. In a summer post titled "Ohmigod, Hillary is like, so SMART!," that called the prospect of an Edwards presidency “exciting,” Hurowitz wrote that reading a campaign dispatch from Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle “…makes it sound like Hillary is surrounded by gushing sycophants comforting her with the campaign equivalent of 'No way - your butt's not too big - you look totally hot!'" In an October post titled "Barack Obama: World's Worst Negotiator," he said that the Illinois senator had "made a pattern of accommodation and capitulation ever since he got to the Senate - and, as a result, keeps getting rolled.”

The same month, he wrote an item for the Huffington Post in which he said the idea of Edwards as president was making him “giddy.”

2. Cue up Freddy Mercury!
Steve walks warily down the street,
With the brim pulled way down low
Aint no sound but the sound of his feet,
Machine guns ready to go
Are you ready, are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat

3. Edwards can't take any more slapping around.
SO I guess he found someone to step in for him. I guess getting knocked on his ass in Nevada really shook him up.

5. He's a hack,
and I hope he gets exposed for his slimy tactics. Edwards should publicly address this situation.

6. I saw the ad on-line today. It is a de facto pro-Giuilani ad. Really shameful!
The ad takes sides with Giuliani in a dispute between the Giuiliani and Clinton campaigns.

Rudy claims he forced Clinton to withdraw her $5,000 "baby bonus" proposal. Of course, there was no such proposal... she mentioned it as something she would favor, not as a developed policy proposal. And her "withdrawal" of it was not a case of kow-towing to the mighty Rudy, as the ad suggests.

But this is where we are... Edwards supporters running 527 ads against Clinton that legitimize Rudy!

"Clinton attack ad tied to Edwards SUPPORTER"

I truly enjoy seeing the same tired 5 Clinton backers ripping on DUers by name and whining about how this is despicable of this non-Edwards campaign affiliated guy to make his own ad saying why Sen. Clinton shouldn't be president. And since when do campaigns not run negative ads against the other candidate anyhow?

Sorry you half dozen fellow DUers, the luster's come off the wagon. She's lost 10 points in just a few weeks, and now will either lose to Obama or Edwards in Iowa because of the 2nd candidate option - sad for you - great for America. We don't need someone so connected to the corporations, and there's no other Democrat more connected than Senator Clinton. Let the overboard response comments commence ---

10. bzzzzt. there are many of us who aren't Clinton supporters who
dislike the use of 527s in the primary process. I thought they sucked the big one 4 years ago and I still think they suck. I hope Clinton doesn't get the nomination but I for sure am not happy with this shit= and sorry this guy is easily connected to Edwards. I'm not saying JE had anything to do with it, but he should repudiate the use of this ad, and all the candidates should state that they won't countenance the use of 527 attack ads in the primaries.

But hey, you want to continue being an apologist for this, have fun.

11. at this point...
I really don't give a crap (absolutely no offense to you, cali), because our country has been shanghaied for 2 consecutive presidential cycles and we are financially on the verge of total collapse - there's no joking there. I really don't care (outside of vote fraud and intimidation) at this point, when my country is on the verge of collapse and millions are losing their homes, how the hell John or another like-minded candidate (Biden, Obama) gets in - because the rethugs don't play fair and never will.

I got another email forward with hundreds of email addresses attached to the forwards talking about Hillary being involved with the Black Panther baloney. Last week I got the Obama one saying he's a Muslim and refuses to wear the flag pin... They do this crap no matter what. So, if it takes some big fan of a candidate to pony up and make commercials to get in anyone but Hillary, so be it.

My Mom is losing her home, my sibling is getting shafted by the military, and my other sibling is getting ignored by the state - I have had it. I don't want the favorite DEM candidate of the corporations to get our nominee, and she's about to unless we do something.

12. Really? Edwards supporter leaves campaign to do hit piece work on the frontrunner.
Nice and convenient given Edwards financial caps in Iowa for accepting public financing.

14. That's where I draw the line!!!!
It's alright for the candidates to take swipes at each other on policy matters and even the worse attacks so far have been tame, all things considered, but to actually place an ad bashing a fellow Democrat by name is low. This is something that the Repugs will do to our nominee but that it's not acceptable to do to another Democrat!!! I'm not blaming Edwards since his campaign didn't put out the ad.

These people should ask Kerry Healey how her gubernatorial race went last time and how that worked out for her. :eyes:

18. I, too, disagree with the tactics
This "supporter" could do more harm than good. I even cringe at the youtube videos that some are putting out. Unfortunately, I don't think the Edwards campaign can slap him down. I hope I'm wrong and they can do something, but isn't there supposed to be a wall between the campaign and 527's?

22. thanks, zalinda for weighing in.
I'm sure the Edwards' campaign is not involved with this, but I do wish that they'd put out a statement saying they disapprove of 527s running these negative ads during the primary season. Wish all the candidates would.

23. For the record
This is from yesterday.

For its part, Barack Obama’s campaign says he wants no part of such tactics. “These types of ads have no place in the race for the Democratic nomination. As Obama’s record shows, he believes all campaign activity should be above-board and accounted for,” Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement today. The Obama campaign’s release on this topic also pointed to his earlier comments opposing such independent expenditure groups. “We do not think people should be donating to 527s,” he said last summer.
