Clinton gets standing ovations from evangelicals
The presidential contender was the only candidate to speak at the AIDS summit.

LAKE FOREST – Many evangelical Christians have taken issue with Hillary Clinton for promoting abortion rights, gay rights and teen condom use, but you wouldn't have known it from the standing ovation that greeted her at Saddleback Church this afternoon.

Although all leading presidential candidates were invited, Clinton was the only one to show up for the annual Global Summit on AIDS and the Church. She delivered a bipartisan message that emphasized the role of the church in addressing AIDS.

“Twenty five years ago when people – mostly young gay men – started dying of an unnamed disease, we didn't talk about it in church,” she said. “We've come a long way. Not only can we talk about AIDS in church, but churches can lead the way.”

The three-day event leading up to World AIDS Day on Saturday is part of Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren's global assault on the disease, with an approach that claims churches worldwide as the most capable network to address the problem.

And it should be noted, she didn't need a BIGOT to do this.

1. Hillary's campaign is flat awsome
Group by group, person by person, vote by vote, the entire campaign is very meticulous. They are simultaneously campaigning not only for the nomination, but for the general election. They're careful not to make statements that will come back in commercials against her after Labor Day next year. They are doing it absolutely text book. You have to appreciate their flawless precision in executing this campaign.

16. It's disappointing only one candidate thought the Global Summit on AIDS was important.

Yet another Presidential moment for Hillary Clinton.

Didn't know that!

25. Even it weren't it would be hards for candidates to pull out of
Iowa and NH to fly out to CA.

Hillary was asked some time ago. It certainly would have politically damaging to beg off to continue campaigning.

But that's routine for this board...Somebody starts a "happy thread" and then drops a stink bomb on another candidate at the end...

Edited on Fri Nov-30-07 09:23 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
I stay out of other candidates' "happy threads" as long as they don't sneak in little "stink bombs" against other candidates...

As long as supporters of candidates don't police other supporters this crap is going to continue to be routine...

That's why William or anybody shouldn't be singled out... The bashing is universal...

Here's hoping those who have criticized other candidates for the same thing can now appreciate the need to become more inclusive.

That last little comment is like a poisin piece of shit in an otherwise positive post. Sadly, you can't resist....after your pledge and all.

13. We've always been in the "light"..
Hillary doesn't have a problem being herself and telling it like it is when meeting with people of different ideologies. Unlike Obama, she doesn't need to capitulate or violate anyone's Civil Rights to openly meet with them.

Hillary has the respect of Evangelicals because she emanates the gravitas other candidates can only wish for.

15. When it comes to promoting abortion rights and gay rights Hillary has been there from the beginning
and remains so until the end.

That's why retired General Keith whatever his name is, an openly gay former General, picked Hillary to support because he said how she has always been there for the GLBT cause.

And amusing. Last week Obama got faux rage from the Hillary people for going on the 700 club. This week Hillary is praised for speaking to the 700 people that actually watch it.

21. Whoa. I don't think you appreciate the difference
between Rick Warren and Pat Robertson- or the people that each one follow. I'm not supporting Clinton- in fact I'm close to throwing my support to Obama, but I did criticize him for going on the 700 club. I also thought it was great last year when he went to Saddleback for this same event with of all people, Sam Brownback.

All Evangelical churches, pastors and congregations, are not equal.

23. Obama doesn't know who he is...
and starts with all his "kingdom stuff...walking with God"... whenever he's in the presence of the Religious Right. Obama has a serious identity flaw and I'm not saying that to be mean spirited about it.

as well as the fact that he had a known homophobic speak for him. There is a difference--can't you see it?

That would explain alot: nuance may = triangulation to some people.

33. Better late than never, I suppose.
"Barack Obama received a warm welcome at an AIDS conference held by Rick "Purpose-Driven Life" Warren.

Dec. 2, 2006 | LAKE FOREST, Calif. -- As he opened his remarks Friday at a World AIDS Day summit at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church, Republican Sen. Sam Brownback said he was feeling a little more "comfortable" than he did the last time he shared a stage with Barack Obama. "We were both addressing the NAACP," Brownback explained. "They were very polite to me … I think they kind of wondered, 'Who's this guy from Kansas?' And then Barack Obama follows, and they're going, 'OK, now we've got Elvis.'"

Figuring their joint appearance at an Orange County evangelical church finally put the shoe on the other foot, Brownback turned to Obama and said, "Welcome to my house." The audience of evangelicals howled with laughter. But when Obama had the chance to speak a few minutes later, he returned to what Brownback had said: "There is one thing I've got to say, Sam: This is my house, too. This is God's house."

Everyone laughed again -- neither Brownback's opening nor Obama's comeback were offered with the rancor that a cold retelling of them probably suggests -- but the point had been made anyway. In Obama's eyes, at least, the Republican Party can no longer claim ownership of all things evangelical.

The bad news for the GOP: Rick Warren apparently agrees.

36. Notice the stark difference with Obama's appearance
Obama's doing anything and everything he can to pander to them, and he only gets a "warm welcome". Hillary doesn't go for Obama's Jesus-speak, and she gets standing O's

and the stark difference in responses is an accurate indicator of their records. Clinton's record on AIDs dwarfs Obama's and there is nothing inappropriate about referring to that fact

You are obviously biased. It's not my fault that Obama has to sponsor a bunch of homophobes just to "reach out". He should take lessons from Clinton, who doesn't have to pander to their religious bigotries

And I have no idea what the hostage situation has to do with this
