Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), is hitting the road in Iowa on behalf of Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) this week.
Schaitberger and other IAFF members, while readily acknowledging that Dodd is an “underdog” in the first-in-the-nation caucuses, will make stops in 20 Iowa cities over eight days. Dodd will join the union in three cities.
The IAFF was widely viewed as being instrumental in Sen. John Kerry’s (D-Mass.) surprise win in Iowa in 2004. In a press release, the IAFF said Schaitberger “will urge fire fighters to participate in the Jan. 3 caucus so they can have an impact in the elections as they did in 2004 when fire fighters mobilized to ensure Sen. John Kerry’s surprise caucus victory.”
Dodd is barely a blip in most Iowa polls, but an IAFF spokesman said in an e-mail that “the Iowa Bus Tour will show everyone in the Great State of Iowa just how hard fire fighters campaign — no matter where their candidate stands in the polls.”
