Do you think there is anything the federal government can do to help reduce the price of gasoline?

‘‘Yes. First, if the OPEC producing nations thought that we were serious about conserving, about seeking alternate sources of fuel, they would drop the prices to lull us into a false sense of security. They did that in the ’70s. If I make it a part of my platform and get started on it right away after taking office, we may see that again.

‘‘Secondly, we could do more investigating into the decisions being made by the oil companies. Some of them don’t make sense.

‘‘Thirdly, we need to get our president and vice president to quit the bellicose rhetoric about World War III. That spooks the markets.

‘‘Also, we could let some of our strategic petroleum reserve into the market. We’ve done that before.
