Blue-collar women see hope in Clinton
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2007/11/24/blue_collar_women_see_hope_in_clinton/

Hillary Clinton's campaign is capitalizing on an overlooked strain of feminism in blue-collar women - nurse's aides, factory workers, farmers, and single mothers - to help fuel her strength among the Democratic candidates for president.

Even many working-class women who have spent their lives in traditional roles at home and work have been animated by Clinton's effort to shatter what she has called "the highest, hardest glass ceiling."

In recent interviews, some of these Clinton supporters say that they have been impressed enough by her advocacy for healthcare and children to jettison their previous views of her as a brash, ambitious lawyer and politician. Some said a female president would do things not just differently, but better.

"We need to have a woman president," said Honey Davis, 64, of Onawa, Iowa, a longtime nurse's aide who has diabetes. "A woman would be a little more tender-hearted toward the people, and knowledgeable about family issues."

In addition, Davis said, because of Clinton's experience watching the wheels of power grind while she was first lady, the New York senator "will have some ways of getting around the old-boy type of thing."

1. Hillary is an "old-boy type of thing"
so there'll be no getting around that with her, just because she happens to be female.

24. sure... what I mean is that she is a member of the good 'ol boys club
or at the very least, a wanna-be member. And by that I mean that she will most definitely give more consideration to corporations than to We, the People. She's already shown this to be true, IMO.

Hope this helps.

2. Blue collar "factory workers" would embrace a NAFTA-signing candidate?
Oh wait. Hillary Clinton uses her husband's resume for convenient purposes except when the light of scrutiny shows that her husband signed NAFTA...then she's...um...against it.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

7. Your attitude on any discussion reminds me of someone...
...who is Jewish who immediately catcalls that someone is "anti-semitic" if they want to talk about Israel and Palestine.

It doesn't work.

And by such childish antics, it proves that the point made was like a sucker punch that not only drew blood but also knocked out a couple teeth.

Keep it up.

One might think he/she thinks the candidate looks un-Presidential...in a racial sort of way...

What a disgusting excuse for a "Democrat."

9. I doubt it. Whether you like it or not, Clinton has been a strong
advocate for women and children, and that evidently resonates. Furthermore, it would be helpful if you posted links to your claim.

34. Here's your link you asked for...
SiCKO: Hillary Clinton became the second largest recipient in the Senate of health care industry contributions.

"As she runs for re-election to the Senate from New York this year and lays the groundwork for a possible presidential bid in 2008, Mrs. Clinton is receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from doctors, hospitals, drug manufacturers and insurers. Nationwide, she is the No. 2 recipient of donations from the industry, trailing only Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, a member of the Republican leadership." Raymond Hernandez and Robert Pear, "Once an Enemy, Health Industry Warms to Clinton," New York Times, July 12, 2006.

14. Indeed. Health Care is Hillary's strongest suit.
But true to DU form, nothing less than single payer kamikaze will do. The obvious question is: If you are going to put yourself up against $15 billion of health care money, would it be best to do it from inside the White House, or while still struggling as a candidate?

23. most people don't understand the healthcare issue period.
they just want affordable healthcare coverage. Saying that most people in the U.S. support single payer actually signifies nothing. And if you don't understand that any single payer plan would have to pass congress, and that the odds of that are very, very small at present, well... whatever.

never allow healthcare reform in the US. If that's HRC's strongest suit, then we are so fucked.

17. It will be an important positive break through when a woman is elected President
When Jackie Robertson integrated major league baseball the social implications were far wider than mere sports. It mattered for society. And it mattered for society when Sandra Day O'Connor became a Supreme Court Judge and it mattered when Janet Reno became Attorney General.

There would be a positive aspect to Elizabeth Dole getting elected President if she became the first female American President (in some alternative universe). It wouldn't be worth the price of having Dole as our President, but there would still be a positive aspect to a woman finally winning the highest office in the land.

28. I am not a Hillary supporter, but she is very smart, and I sometimes wonder whether she
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 01:59 PM by tblue37
is actually planning to be a lot more liberal if she wins, but is "playing the game" right now just in order to win. I sure hope that is what is going on, though I fear it might not be.

Many years ago Alan AlLda starred in a movie entitled The Seduction of Joe Tynan. He played a very progressive, decent candidate who made so many compromises in order to get into a position of power that by the time he had the power, he was hemmed in on all sides and unable to use it for the good he wanted to use it for.

Does anyone else rememebr that movie?
