Email from my brother-in-law about smearing political candidates
I received this email from my brother-in-law in reference to the smear that we can expect...

Enjoy! Tis funny!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know if this is true or not, but it makes a good story.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Judy Wallman, a professional genealogical researcher, discovered that Hillary Clinton's great-great uncle, Remus Rodham, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889.

The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows. On the back of the picture is this inscription: 'Remus Rodham; horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times.

Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.

Judy e-mailed Hillary Clinton for comments. Hillary's staff of professional image adjusters sent back the following biographical sketch:

"Remus Rodham was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.''

And THAT is how it's done folks!-----------GET READY for 2008!!!!

1. Is your brother in law a Republican? They pulled that shit with GORE, too.
It's not terribly funny. The idea is to suggest that Democratic candidates are bullshitters, and we know who the real bullshitters are.

Here's the DEBUNK link: http://www.snopes.com/politics/clintons/thief.asp

2. Retired military
He has always claimed the Democrats would dismantle the military.
Although in the last election I don't think he voted because Kerry protested the war with Jane and he couldn't vote for bu$h.

But historically he has been republicon.

I responded with:
Would be funny but this sort of slander is exactly what we can expect over the next 11 months.
Don't believe anything you hear from the talking head or read in the daily wipe unless you can verify it as truth.
We have been lied to for so long it is difficult to tell the truth about anything from anyone.

5. I'm retired military, myself. But I gotta say, some of the most intensive
"smart spending" occurred under Clinton. The Cheney drawdown was painful, but support services, like barracks, family services, and general infrastructure improvements accompanying consolidations were significant under Clinton.

I was always a Democrat, in spite--perhaps because of--many decades of attempted indoctrination.

7. Well, I didn't find it funny when they pulled it with Gore, and I SURE wouldn't find it
funny if they tried to pull it with Obama, Richardson...or anyone else.

It's a limp joke designed to insult. That's just not funny to me.

8. It can and most likely does apply to any politician running for office.
If the original post was about a repug, we all think it was really funny. So I think it is funny. :P

3. This LIE has been around since Hillary Clinton ran for the Senate
and if you go to snopes you will see this. It is the Hillary bashers who still post it...AFTER IT HAS BEEN PROVED. AND IF YOU GO TO THE CENSUS PAGE WITH HIS RECORDS....you will see he never went near where they say he did. Just another smear...Intelligent People ignore them.

4. I got that from a Republican friend...
Yea, I have some, but I don't let them get away with this sort of thing. I e-mailed back and asked her how she felt about issues. She knows I do not support HC, but I explained that I thought it was much better to address the issues than to simply smear the candidate.

9. From Urban Legends
The same story has also been applied to Bush.

As one would expect given that it lampoons the sanitizing of family history, the joke is very popular in genealogical circles. An apolitical 1999 version posted on the Internet features language almost identical to that of the "Remus Rodham" version and probably served as a template for the latter. Another posting offers this amusing alternative to the standard punchline: "Uncle Al occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution. He was attached to his position by the strongest of ties and his death came as a real shock."

Politicians being the most infamous practitioners of verbal deception, it was inevitable certain of them would end up the butt of this joke. In addition to the "Remus Rodham" edition of October 2000 (above), a "Gunther Gore" version appeared later in the same month, only to be superceded by a cleverer "Chadsworth Gore" variant with the added tag line, "And thus passed the very first hanging Chad," an allusion to the Florida voting machine scandal of 2000. It was only a matter of time before we heard precisely the same tale told of a ne'er-do-well by the name of "Chadsworth Bush."

What goes around comes around.
