1. America we should all hang our heads in shame. We have no moral standing
to saying anything and we collectively let that happen by electing GWB as president fucking twice. We are tied by oil and money and thats all that counts. I can't believe the discussion taking place on CNN right now. WTF there is no outrage and they camly discussing it like its no big deal.

2. Yeah, it's good, but it's nothing but political opportunism by our government
Just the other week they changed their policy to seek clemency for Canadians facing execution in foreign countries.

They're quick to condemn any nation of color of human rights wrongdoing, but any nation of whites can do what they like. That's our "new" government.

5. So is Bangladesh, and I haven't heard anything from Canada's gov't on that.
Sure, it's good they focus on it, but it's hard to give hem credit when I know they're only doing it out of a concern for public opinion.

It's like global warming...they only say enough to neutralize the issue in the media, and then they shut their mouths about it as much as possible.

7. Doing the right thing is unusual for Canada lately.
I think this is a better example of the direction we've been heading lately:

Canada drops sponsorship of UN anti-death-penalty resolution

(snip)

The U.N. Human Rights Commission voted every year from 1998 to 2005 on a similar resolution, before concluding its final session in 2006 after a decline in international credibility. The U.N. has created a new Human Rights Council to replace the old commission.

Canada was a co-sponsor for each of the resolutions, according to Amnesty International.

"Cosponsorship is the stage at which Canada has the opportunity to demonstrate that its firm commitment to abolition has not changed," Amnesty International secretary general Alex Neve wrote to Harper.

Cosponsorship does not involve much more effort than a phone call or raising a hand during a meeting, said Canada's former ambassador to the U.N., Paul Heinbecker.

"You can only take these as signs of how the government wants to be seen," Heinbecker said.
