Barack Obama on Thursday won the support of United Auto Workers Region 4, a union that represents roughly 68,000 active Midwest members.
Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois, received nearly 65 percent of the votes from about 420 delegates, said Dennis Williams, the union's Region 4 director.
Region 4 covers Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. The votes were not split up by state, Williams said.
"When Barack Obama came in, he really touched them personally," Williams said of the union's members. "He talked about change, and people liked that. ... I think Senator Obama brings a freshness, and that's what our members like about him."
All presidential candidates were invited to speak. Those accepting the invitation were all Democrats. In addition to Obama, John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Bill Richardson and Dennis Kucinich spoke.
Union members were disappointed that no Republican candidate responded, Williams said.
The Region 4 results will be given to the group's national officials. Williams said it is uncertain whether the national UAW will officially endorse a candidate.
