Polls: Kerry has huge leads in N.Y. and California
Opinion polls released Friday show Sen. John Kerry has huge leads over Sen. John Edwards in New York and California, two of the 10 "Super Tuesday" states voting on March 2.

<snip>

While Edwards has said he expects to do particularly well in upstate New York where manufacturing job losses have been heavy, the Marist poll found Kerry was well ahead — 70 percent to 14 percent — in that traditionally more conservative region.

1. Kerry had a huge lead in WI too. I'm sure this gap is going to close.

10. Is it just a rumor that Edwards was getting a lot of votes
from Republicans in WI who were able to cross lines and vote in the Dem primary? If so, I don't think that can be duplicated here in NY, where you have to be a registered Dem to vote.

15. It would be very surprising if Kerry were to win NY with 70% of the vote.
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 12:05 PM by BurtWorm
But that's a very large hurdle for Edwards to get over.

PS: I wouldn't be surprised to witness another Ed Koch-style moment, a la 1988, when Koch exploited his endorsement of Al Gore to grandstand repulsively against Jesse Jackson. I wouldn't be surprised if Edwards got caught in one of those magical NY political moments when the local politicoes prove a little less predictable than expected. It's more likely to happen to Edwards than Kerry.

25. Not true. Kerry got a much larger percentage of Dem voters...
in WI than Edwards.

28. Which is why we all said that Dean couldn't win -- he appealed to far left
but not to middle.

19. 11% of Edwards' votes were from R's, and 4% of Kerry's .
The effect was marginal.

21. 11% is marginal?!
That's more than 1 in 10. .11% is marginal. 11% is a bloc.

24. Apples and oranges. WI had an open primary.
I don't believe that component exists in NY and CA.

5. I focus on getting Bush out
Bush is the most anti-democracy president in the history of the country.

I am very proud that Dean stood up to Bush. I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

But the fight against Bush must go on. I will support the Democratic nominee, whoever he is.

8. Wish he'd have stayed in thru March 2
DK and AS are still in.

Guess the pressure got to great after WI, fickle endorsers and all. And the relentless attack of the media.

*sigh*

9. lol
this whole process has been decided by fickle people.

Just this morning I was watching MTV for some tunes(they actually play music in the morning), and an MTV news thing came up interviewing a college student who had voted in the primary. she said something to the effect of "My heart was telling me to vote for someone else, but then my brain told me that Kerry was very popular and so he could beat GWB. So i voted for him. Elections are about compromise."

That is so BS!!
I cant believe people have actually gotten that state of mind to infect others. That is the most screwed up philosophy ive ever heard.

whether people like it or not, the progressive movement WILL still be here when this is all said and done and THEY STILL will be unsatisfied with the political climate until they get someone who represents them well in the white house. Now that its going to be impossible with the prospects of either Kerry or Edwards there, Id expect at the very least that after this election, you will see us all go back to whatever independent party fits our needs. So be happy guys. Yeah, most of us will vote demo this time to get Shrub out of office, but what about kerry or edwards re-election? what about then? what about all the same people in 2000 who felt disinfranciased from our party who will feel the exact same way after this election is over?
aw hell, why am i even saying any of this. none of you give a rats ass. winning is everything, beliefs are nothing. God Bless America.

22. Progressives will have better luck w Kerry or Edwards in the WH than BUSH
while the world won't be perfect, I can guarantee you Kerry or Edwards will be more sympathetic to progressives and their issues than GWB,

I can tell you that we are not voting for Edwards. He is deluding himself if he thinks he can win here. We don't like Southern candidates that much. I want Kerry.
