Behind the scenes, presidential campaigns are betting that Iowa caucus is on January 5, 2008
Edited on Sat Oct-06-07 05:30 PM by zulchzulu
People I know in Iowa who have direct contacts with the Iowa folks working behind the scenes to outdo Wyoming (who have moved their caucus to January 5) are basically assuming that Iowa will also be on the same day.

I don't have links at the moment (other than the one below), but all the presidential candidate campaigns have put plans to assume the caucus will be on the new date and not January 14.

Moving the caucus up to the new date changes the race's dynamics since it is then so close to the holiday season. People who would usually start deciding after the holidays are over will now have a shorter window of time. The race could be stronger for those that are firmly committed to their candidate of choice and would participate on a cold winter night for a couple hours. Then again, with the way the weather is these days, they might have a barbecue cookout before the caucus...

1. The early voting is the only reason any of the candidates give a flying fuck about Iowa

Which is why Iowa fights so hard for it.

2. Thanks for letting us Iowans know when our caucus will be held
:hi:

Good to know.

However, there's the potential of it being held on January 3rd (since that's where the GOPers want it) AND I thought that only Wyoming's republicans were going Jan. 5th (Democrats are still planning on March 8th - I think).

4. Thanks for clearing things up, Debi
I was sure one of the Iowa gang would set things straight. I hope to be at my caucus, whichever day it is. I'm an Edwards supporter, for whatever it's worth.

6. Swing on over to the IA Forum and hang out with all your neighbors!
We speculate on the caucus date (and who will win) on a regular basis.

Oh, and be jealous of me....I hung out with John and Elizabeth Edwards (and Jack and Emma Claire) this morning. :hi:

But I hung out with James Denton and Cate Edwards last weekend so I can't complain too much!!!

I heard Elizabeth found a 4-leaf clover today in Iowa. Just saying......!!!

10. Oh very, very jealous!
My dream moment for sure to meet the Edwards family. I do drop over the Iowa forum several times a week and check things out. I seldom have anything intelligent to add, although I've posted a few times. Was interesting to read the story about the Stanley family and follow the link to the Register. We don't get a newspaper anymore (the Register made it impossible to get it here in rural West Branch). Rob Borsellino was a favorite, as is Reka. I e-mailed them with comments a few times and always got personal responses from both. They did/do take a lot of heat from right-wing wackos. They were so brave to move back to finish raising their kids here and giving Rob a safe place to be during his illness. I watch the Net for news these days. I'll keep an eye on you, Debi.

14. Thanks for the info...
I was told the 5th was the date for the Democratic caucus. I wish it would stay at January 14...

15. I wish every state would have stayed on the date their representatives
voted on in December of 2005.

I'm not saying that the 5th won't be the date for the Iowa Caucuses - I'm just saying the Iowa Democratic State Central Committee hasn't voted on any date yet.
