JOE BIDEN - letter to the editor, DesMoines Register
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 01:26 PM by kad7777
Below is a letter to the editor written by Phyllis Hughes Ewing, daughter of Harold Hughes, former Governor (1963-1969), and former Senator (1969-1975), of Iowa.

Biden's courage, experience make him best choice

October 1, 2007

Joe Biden exemplifies courage and character. He's fought back all his life - from spending hours as a child teaching himself to correct his stutter, to rebuilding his shattered family after his wife and daughter were killed in an accident that left his sons critically injured, to a full recovery from two brain aneurysms 20 years ago.

He is the same Joe Biden who passed the revolutionary Violence Against Women Act and pushed President Bill Clinton relentlessly to stop the genocide in Bosnia. No public official has worked harder or longer to end the senseless war in Iraq. Recently, political columnist David Yepsen hailed Biden's vote of support on the supplemental war funding bill as a "profile in courage."

The conventional wisdom in the national press that only money matters and our choices are limited to the "big three" does not ring true here in Iowa. Time after time, we've seen candidates, seemingly out of the running, emerge on caucus night to become the most serious contenders for the nomination.

This is not a time for the inexperienced to learn on the job, nor is it a time for leaders who do not have the ability to inspire the American people. As Iowans, we have an awesome responsibility. What we do on a cold night in January will largely determine who will be the next president of the United States. It is about Iowa Democrats having the courage to go against conventional wisdom and demand the best.

Please join me in helping Joe Biden become the next president of the United States.

- Phyllis Hughes Ewing,

West Des Moines.

1. Great letter - thanks
I have to say I agree with her. I love the Iowa. They take politics very seriously and manage to sift through the BS and find the substance.

4. There have been alot of editorials lately in praise of Biden!
It's as if the people have to do the job the msm refuses to do.

Thanks for posting!

9. Great to see this kind of support
in Iowa! Let's hope that Iowa starts the "Biden Run" for real and finally gives him some much deserved recognition from the msm. And it will take off from there! We can only hope that the people in Iowa see what kind of man he is and how exceptional he would be as President.

Very eloquent letter, and right on the money. He's someone who can hit the ground running, and that's what we need. And he can do it with the entire country behind him. I've heard many Democrats express that they don't want someone who could win over moderate Republicans and Independents. I guess they would have rejected John Kennedy if he was currently one of our candidates. My prayers are in the hands of God and the Iowa Democrats.

13. Thank you for posting.
That was a nice, positive letter supporting Biden.

I will keep it in mind when I make my final decision about which candidate to support.
