From DRAFTGORE.COM
Dear Friends,

We are entering the final stretch of this campaign, energized by a wave of enthusiasm and the hope that a Gore candidacy may be just weeks away. No, we cannot promise you that. But our candidate has left the door wide open and now it's up to us to try to persuade him to walk through it. Events over the next few weeks could affect this decision - and with it, the course of history. Some of them are out of our hands, such as the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize on October 12. But what we can do is make our voices heard to let Al Gore know that our call to service is backed by our willingness to fight for him. Please read on and join us on this historic journey.

Help us take out an ad in the New York Times

This will be our biggest bang of the campaign: a full-page ad in the New York Times with a powerful open letter to Al Gore asking him to run for president. But this ad is extremely expensive and we cannot afford it without your contribution. This is a one-time request and a unique opportunity for you to let Al Gore know how strongly you feel about him running in 2008. This is one letter he is sure to read. Please help us make it a reality by making a contribution today.
Organize locally on our new website

This week we launched a new version of the Draft Gore website, complete with organizing tools and boards that allow you to form local chapters, communicate, organize events, and help set up an army of supporters that could soon become the core organization of a potential Gore candidacy.

Please visit our website and explore the various ways in which you may become involved in this historic effort. To start a chapter, click on the "Gore Supporters in Your State" link and follow the simple instructions.

It may seem hard to believe that a group of grassroots activists like us could have a real impact on the choice of candidates for president. But as Margaret Mead once said:

Never underestimate the power of a few committed people to change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Thank you for your continued support of Draft Gore.

Sincerely,

Monica Friedlander
Draft Gore

26. What a totally ridiculous response
Besides it going against the spirit of the event, it was simply one more way for them to state that the Live Earth concert and what it stood for meant nothing to them... only using it for their own publicity stunts. I wouldn't give to any such group. I would rather give my money to organizations such as Mr. Gore's The Climate Project that are actually doing something now to fight climate change. And the same person in charge of this now was in charge of it in 2004 when I was with it a very short time before I saw the light, and didn't even acknowledge the environment. But I suppose since Mr. Gore has become so "popular" it is now the in thing to do to get publicity and checks... unless of course you want to look like hypocrites at an environemntal concert that wasn't about you.

OH, and RW FOX also had a pollution spewing plane fly over Live Earth as well so I guess they have something in common. Which leads me to wonder if there are some people in Draft Gore and these groups that are Rwers infiltrating these groups who just want to suck him into this to get him off discussing this crisis. The constant pushing at this point to me seems a bit suspicious in lieu of his own words. Give us a reason why we should trust any groups over the Internet who continually ask for money? If they want an ad they should pay for it.

I also think the man has more times than he cares to count reiterated his position. I then think this is now about those who continue to stroke their egos. And they need to then realize that even should he say he is running at some point which I doubt very much, that they will not be able to take credit for that which is of course what this is really all about, and will not be hired by him as I am sure they are dreaming by continuing to harass him everyday.

I have been there, done that, got the T-shirt, and can say firsthand that draft groups are nothing on the whole but ego seeking groups that don't know the first thing about how to draft anyone because traditional drafts are not conducted the way they are conducting this. So you can give all the ridiculous answers you wish, but an ad in a newspaper isn't going to do anything to support his endeavors now. All it will do is put him on the spot and personally I find that to be arrogant and intruding on him.

42. And to think, Gore could stop it all by saying a few simple words.
But for SOME REASON, he refuses to say the words.

He could've kept that plane from flying over... He could have all this money being spent on drafting him being diverted to other causes, but either A) He is too stupid to find the words (which is what you seem to believe) or B) There is a reason.

Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 06:54 AM by RestoreGore
Do you realize people sitting around me at that concert looked up and saw that and laughed? They probably thought it was totally ironic that a group that supposedly "supports" the man and preserving the environment would do something like that by CHOICE. So your "oy" in whatever typical fashion it was delivered does nothing to further discussion here... but then, it doesn't seem like the people behind this want discussion, they just want money and people to just go rah rah. If Mr. Gore decides he genuinely has to run now he has more than enough resources to do it and I would give money to HIM if HE asked for it. I'm not about to spend my money on groups that waste it on stunts like that. Oy, indeed.

30. Your screen name is ironic, you know
Every chance you get you slam people who wish to have Al Gore as president. It has become comical really. Whenever there is a thread that discusses Al Gore as president you are one of the first to jump in and piss on it.

The people on DU who want Gore as president are on your side. They are your brothers and sisters. The majority of them are actually doing things to help the environment. How wonderful is that? Their logic tells them that the best person to be in power for the environmental movement is Al Gore - not Hillary not Barak not Edwards, etc. Al Gore has very limited power to be a tool for large scale change as an activist so these fine people on DU wish to do everything they can to encourage the man to run. This is a good thing.

Is an airplane flying a banner a bad thing? Well, one could argue if it is used to advertise "Buffalo Wings $2.99 at Hooters!" then yes. But if it is for a greater good such as getting the one politician who can move all environmental efforts forward 50 years then no it is not such a bad thing.

The bigger issue here is in your constant anger toward anyone that even mentions Al Gore's name in a political context.

38. And after the MoveOn ad, they won't be giving any more discounts.
I think MoveOn.org only paid around $64 000 for the "Betray Us" ad. After all the criticism the NYT said it was a mistake to give them a special price.

I think the commercial rate is around double that.

So you would need more than 1000 people to each give $100.

It's a good test of how much support there would be for a Gore candidacy.

52. OK - so the standby rate is $65 000 for a full page
So you would only need 650 people to pay $100 each.

Or 1000 people to pay $65 each.

Or 3237 people to pay $20.08 each.

25. I gave up on that dream a while back, and I can't blame Al.
He was cheated, hard, and bad in '00. Since then he has still managed to make a difference in the world.
He is having his cake AND eating it too the way things are.
He gets to go on talk shows, and shove global warming as a real, proven FACT down the reich winder's throats, AND he gets to have a private life. He is making a difference in the lives of people and the globe, AND he doesn't have to play politics. He's a rock star, and still has his privacy (for the most part).

WHY should he be president?! At this point he's a King maker! His support for a candidate will MAKE that candidate.

I wish he'd run, but the reality is... he's not, and I can't blame him, I really really can't.

So I'm voting DK in the California primary and hope he does well enough that he at least gets a VP slot.

But to all those of you hoping our senators are elected... I would point out that we will loose that seat(s). That our control of the congress will be iffy at best unless we win BIG in the general in 08! If we don't do MAGNIFICENTLY well, we are pretty much fucked!

I want Al to put his hat in, He'll be all but guaranteed the presidency with a massive majority this time.

What can they really say against him? He's been completely right!
Sadly He won't run, so I'll make my 'protest' vote for DK and hope things don't get worse under Hilary.
and we really need to start correcting these assholes in the media, it's MRS (missus) Clinton, NOT MS. Clinton.. that's Chelsea :)

29. I agree. He would unite all voters and be an easy win.
Our Democratic party is so fractured. There are too many parties and candidates to chose from. I think he would be the one candidate we could all stand behind and unite for. I don't think he'll run though mainly because of his friendship with the Clintons - I don't think he wants to run against Hillary. I also don't think he likes the idea of all that pressure again. Every detail, every decision will be criticized - even more so this time. That's got to be an enormous weight.
Until then, I'm going to vote for DK too. He is so far from business as usual, that he looks to be the candidate this country NEEDS. An exact opposite of Bush.

40. The only way......
I would vote for Gore is if he made an 180 turn and come out and say he was wrong to support NAFTA and the WTO. Those two agreements were the worst thing that Clinton/Gore did to this country.

With NAFTA, CAFTA, WTO, and the like in place, any meaningful change in how we treat the environment and our own workers here in the US is just a pipe dream. All of these agreements are just forms of corporate protectionism at the expense of things like the environment and workers rights.

Sooooooo - until Gore rejects the agreements he helped forge and then vigorously supported, he will not be getting my support.

61. What?
That so called "one issue" covers so much ground on things that are at the core of what Gore is supposed to stand for.

Nice thinking on the "you've been here less than 40 days and you have less than 23 posts" so your thoughts don't count. Are you a closet republican? Talk about having your blinders on.

Anyways - support for NAFTA, WTO, CAFTA and the like in their current form covers a lot more ground than just one issue. Most of those agreements are corporate protectionism agreements at the expense of things like the environment, workers rights (like I stated previously), and a few more issues that I won't cover for brevity's sake. These trade agreements more like an 800 lb gorilla than a "single issue".

Being for these agreements, by default makes you anti-environment, anti-middle class and pro-corporate greed. Gore was (check the 91 VP debates) and still could be a strong supporter of NAFTA and the WTO agreements. If he decides to run and is still in favor of the agreements in their current form, then he is not serious about addressing the environment and workers rights in any meaningful way.

No candidate in favor of these agreements should get anyone's vote if said people are voting for their interests and don't own a large corporation.

44. I can't get over what a tragic diversion of energy this is
for god's sake, he's not running. I love, respect and admire Al Gore, but he's not running.

Put that energy into a campaign to fast track the country into renewable resources. Because politics isn't your strong suit; but the resources issue may just be more important in the long run.

48. Tragic Diversion?
You can extend that logic for everyone but the ultimate winner I guess. From the start, I proclaim my first primary choice is Gore, and it will remain so until the moment I punch the ticket early next year.

I join a significant percentage of likely primary voters favoring Gore. Knowing just that fact about us, the announced candidates could probably guess what I'm looking for on the issues.

And to let them know I'm listening: Dodd, Richardson and DK have small contributions from me.

57. We will stop...
only when he tells us to. We will not quit unless and until he gives a definitive "no."

He doesn't need you or anybody else to do his thinking or speaking for him.

We admit we don't know what he's going to decide. You and a few others profess to know what's on his mind. How presumptuous.

58. He has only said he isn't running now and has no plans to...

That's political speech for "not yet, but it's not off the table" ~ for you wet-behind-the-ears folks. ;)

60. Oh Captain, my Captain!
I must ask that you indulge us on this....nicely. There's no harm and the final answer will be obvious within a short time. You must know many hold outs for President Gore will jump on the Good Ship Obama if that final answer turns out to be "no".

On the other hand, if it turns out to be "yes".......wouldn't Obama be a wonderful VP choice?

:toast:

Hope it's all good in your world old friend--
Julie
