Kerry & Kucinich are Co-Sponsors to the Permanent Partners Immigration Act
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 06:47 AM by La_Serpiente
Kerry & Kucinich are both Co-Sponsors to the Permanent Partners Immigration Act

What would this act do?

It will modify the federal Immigration and Nationality Act to provide same-sex partners of U.S. citizens and same-sex partners of lawful permanent residents the same immigration rights that legal spouses of U.S. residents enjoy. Specifically, it would add the term "permanent partner" to the federal law's list of definitions of family, and cover same-sex partners of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.

The bill in the Senate is S.1510.IS
The bill in the House is H.R.832.IH

1. It looks as if this will cover "permanent partners" of

any gender combination, e.g., heterosexual couples would also be covered. Unless there's something in the fine print I missed. ;-)

3. But... but...
People are saying that Kerry is Bush-lite.... I can't actually, god-forbid, look at evidence. Unfounded assertions are all I need, and no "facts" are going to sway me!

4. Kick for substantive issue
God forbid the Kerry-bashers look at what he's actually done. They've been blinded by the campaign rhetoric.

17. No, some of us have been stopped
from backing him by his half-hearted claims. Permanent partner indeed! How about SPOUSE?!

20. You're missing the point
Once same-sex marriage is legalized, this bill will be redundant. It's a stop-gap measure until that point.

Perhaps you should save your outrage?

25. I might save my outrage
if Kerry hadn't come out and said he doesn't support same-sex marriage in the wake of the Mass. decision. That was my last straw. I forgave him IWR and Patriot Act, I forgave him support for NAFTA, I was willing to overlook all of those things in favor of what I thought was a long history of being very liberal. It's only now with a little more in depth look that I see he's just another centrist. Liberal to a point conservative enough to prevent being a truly progressive option. No sale.

5. Edwards undecided
"Same-Sex Immigration: Edwards is undecided on legislation that would allow American citizens to sponsor their same-sex partners for immigration into the country."

6. Also:
Family Medical Leave: Edwards is undecided on extending Family Medical Leave Act to same-sex couples.

Family Medical Leave: Kerry supports extending the Family Medical Leave Act to same-sex couples.

7. about John Kerry
this is what he has always done. he has focused on the specific rights, not just what to name something such as "marriage" or "civil unions". he knows the right wing uses the term "gay marriage" as a wedge issue which we will just lose in the end. even california just about a couple years ago voted for the anti gay proposition on same sex marriage. it wasn't alabama , it was california that voted FOR it. even our governor, senators and most democratic politicians opposed it, yet voters still voted for it in big numbers. so you don't have to agree with kerry's approach, but i hope you don't see him as being anti gay .

8. This position is consistent with Americans values
I don't know why people balk at the idea of same-sex marriage, but polls show they do. On the other hand, if you ask you people about this right or that right, the majority oppose discrimination against gays.

The Republicans are using the marriage issue to rile their base. We should be on guard, but not back down. The more we discuss marriage issues, the more reason will prevail, and the Republicans will either be forced to back down, or cave in to their most reactionary elements and be forced into a losing position.

And we shouldn't lose sight of the real battles we can win.

16. This is great.
I am pleased to see this, thanks for posting it. I do not understand what the reluctance is in this country but it is time to get it out there and deal with it. Good for both of them. I fluctuate with Kerry but still think he is more liberal than some here would like us to believe. Edwards is OK too but his undecided stance on these kinds of issues puzzles me. It keeps me from replacing Kerry with Edwards as number 2 in my list.

23. Expect this bill to be abandoned
Kerry will run to the center. In fact he already has and with Dean out he will be a good DLC centrist. He won't be fighting for this bill anymore if he stays true to form.
