You Can Shut Up Now
Yes, GOP, you can shut up now – nobody’s listening anymore. After six-plus years of applying lipstick to a succession of pigs, the incessant oinking is drowning out that once-legendary spin.

Let me share a few facts with you (and don’t be embarrassed to have to ask what that word means; your unfamiliarity with the concept is completely understandable).

Now, that right there is your basic problem. You see, you have to have some facts on which to base your talking points; otherwise, they start sounding like punchlines – and get pretty much the same response.

The American people are growing impatient with the war. No, the American people are totally out of patience with the lies they’ve been told by the C-in-C, whose oversight of this MISSION (*watch this space - scheduled to be defined any day now) has been a series of spectacular blunders that keep getting trotted out as successes.

Losing troops on a daily basis, civilian casualties on the uptick, increasing bloodshed = progress. Now, do you see how that doesn’t equate? Maybe you can get Karl Rove to explain it for you; after all, he’s the guy with the math, remember?

You’ve got to wonder where the American people got the notion that this war would last a matter of months, would pay for itself, and would result in the Iraqi people greeting us with sweets and flowers. I don’t know where that bullshit got started, but it kind led everyone to believe that this far down the road, the newly-liberated Iraqis would be better off than they were under a brutal dictator – or, at the very least, have enough electricity per day to read the fine print in the Iraqi Freedom handbook – you know, the part that states "Thanks to our occupation, you have NO freedom".

Those who want to cut-and-run are giving aid and comfort to the enemy. No, George’s total incompetence is giving aid and comfort to the enemy – and man-oh-man, they must be reveling in the absolute abundance of said aid and comfort.

If we leave Iraq now, the country will dissolve into violence and chaos. Ahem – don’t look now, but the country has already dissolved into violence and chaos. Everybody else knows that – why don’t you?

Abandoning Iraq will result in the enemy following us home. I just gotta believe that line was meant as a joke from day one. Everybody knows that this administration has made the country so safe, those terrorists would never get across the border – except that the border isn’t being guarded, because the money it would take to secure it is being spent in Iraq creating more terrorists. It’s kind of a “Catch-22” thing, and who doesn’t love that movie, huh?

Besides, the big question would be, “Where are the terrorists going to get the funds to travel here in the first place?” And the big answer is, “Maybe they wound up with the billions in cash that’s gone missin’ in the Fog of War.” That all worked out nicely, didn’t it?

For my money – and thanks to this booming economy, I don’t have much of it – I really don’t worry too much about terrorists showing up at the local mall. And if they did show up, all they’d have to do is scare the shoppers into heart attacks – because most of those shoppers don’t have health insurance, so they’d just wind up dying’ for lack of funds. No bombs or gunfire necessary.

Look, it’s obvious you’ve given up anyway. One quick gander at the Republican presidential hopefuls is a study in utter hopelessness. Giuliani, who spent more time at Ground Zero than anyone – well, in spirit anyway, and shouldn’t that count? Grandpa Thompson who thinks posting “Please Feel Free to Smoke” signs will lead to victory in Iraq, and Tom Tancredo, who believes that threatening to bomb Islamic holy sites will bring lasting peace to the Middle East.

You’re not even tryin’ here, folks. So why not pack in the ol’ talking points and save them for another day – say 2068, when the populace might well have forgotten the Bushbaby, Abramoff, Gonzales, Cunningham, Vitter, Foley, Craig, and the rest of the diaper-clad, bribe-taking, pedophiles and hypocrites.

If you can just keep your noses clean and not get caught up in any new scandals until then, you might have a – oh, sorry. Forgot who I was talking to for a minute there.

Well, anyway, good luck in 2068!

I would love to still be alive in 2068 (a spry 110 years old, heh heh), and be strolling through a Barnes and Noble to pick up the latest best seller - Yappin Into the Void, with the subtitle The Extinction of the GOP. With an introduction by NanceGreggs, no less!

3. Don't underestimate the void.
Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 08:45 PM by Dr_eldritch
After all, no one is there, and damn straight we should fear no one and no thing. If no one gets the message, then no one might surely act on it... in which case we have to worry because no one is perfect, and no one never fails, even worse... no one is loved by all and lives forever.

But I breathe a sigh of relief that we are not dealing with no one... we're dealing with some 27% actual people. It's not a void after all, there is something there, and we can most certainly deal with it.

I'll wager that a good portion of them show up to vote in February -- 'cause that's why they call it Presidents' Day, right?

5. Recommended, and recommended with great enthusiasm.
Also deadly accurate. We're watching the dissolution of a political party that can't decide if it wants to melt the polar ice caps next weekend or burn femininsts and gay people at the stake after church this Sunday.

What a mess.

And as you accurately and brilliant put it, there's a whole lotta oinkin' goin on over there in the Republican camp.

I hope several Puke lurkers are here to see this post, Nance, and I hope they're throwing the temper-tantrum of their lives over what they've just read in your post.

Ding ding ding Bravo.

THAT is a GREAT line, my friend!!!

If only the Republicans had cut-and-run when they realized the Liar-in-Chief was going to be their ultimate undoing, they might still have a shot at the 2068 election ...

stick with the little monkey.

Wow are they feelin' great about that now or what?

McCain was the cross-over Maverick with stellar appeal who would secure Ohio and New Hampshire for the red team, but he endorsed the war, then the surge, then kept praising the carnage, and now he's behind a witless creep like Romney in some polls.

You'd think someone might have told him the president's war is unpopular.

The Chimp and his war are each about as popular as syphillis at a frat party. Congress and the White House seems to be the only places where it has any decent degree of support. With something like 70% of the country opposing the war, congresscritters continue to yammer on about "cut and run", "fight them over there", and "Reid just wants to surrender as quickly as possible." Is there some bit of national security data that they are all privy to that we can't know? Is there a reason for this. Even after November 2006 Congress continues to treat * as if it's October 2001 and his word is law.

35. Bush's propaganda never got backed up by his asking for sacrifice of
the citizenry. He barked about the terrorists and used the macho posturing you indicate to effective advantage as long as all that was going on in Baghdad was pulling down Saddam Hussein's statue.

When the rubble began to pile up and the black smoked started rising along the landscape, and the Iraq government(s) and various alliant-coalitions began to "turn on each other like rats in a slumfire" (Hunter S. Thompson's phrase), there were no words to buoy the propaganda and public support fell rapidly.

Eventualy Congress has gotten the message from constituents that there is no support for Bush's war and significantly less support for individual Congresscritters if they support Bush's war.

As long as it seemed to take, it happened far faster than public shift in the Vietnam years.

And of course, "Old Europe" was exactly right about this from the very first instant, even as Dubya was publicly ridiculing those nations.

14. Thom Hartman had a great rant on AAR the other day
addressing himself to the few (if any) remaining actual Republicans from the Grand Old Party

He basically said Take back your party!
He prefaced it with a history lesson - how the Republican Party founded in the 1850's was a party of the people, with Abe Lincoln as its first nominee - but the robber barons of the late 19th century invaded, and then after getting thoroughly marginalized by FDR/Truman following the Hoover debacle, they spent the 50s and 60s recruiting the racist voters, and then the religious freaks, whom they could count on to vote for whatever they were told to as long as the proper catchphrases were grunted periodically.

Personally, I don't think there is anyone left to take back that party. The once-proud GOP is like the people in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." They let the aliens in, and now there are no humans left.

Those who have created a world class-man made disaster in USA and the world (The liars, cheats and thieves are going to get away with their nefarious deeds) are leaving behind messes that will take generations of honest people to make-right.

The fix will take courage and leadership. Are we ready to make the commitment when the baton of power is passed?

Wasn't Bosnia/Herzogivina and Kosovo almost the same situation? Ethnic and sectarian squabbles that became all out civil war? NATO stepped in, bombed the hell out of Belgrade, established a diplomatic mission beforehand, and brought Milosovic to justice where he died in The Hague? Not a single American soldier died. One fighter got shot down if I recall correctly. It was an F-117. The pilot(s) returned safely. It took what? 3 months? That's what I call a slam-fucking-dunk MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

40. too early to celebrate
yes, they are ridiculous but, they still get what they want - the media is still on their side - and this war is sure to continue - it looks like chimpy is going to make it to jan. 2009 scott free, leaving the iraq mess for someone to else to clean up- yes, it will probably be a democrat but, all the unconstitutional laws that go unchallenged will be permanently in place and it will not matter who is in charge - WE ARE FUCKED!

this is the attitude that i am going to keep:

42. And let's not forget
Congressman Patrick McGovern (R-NC) who shouldn't be under the radar much longer.

43. The American people are growing impatient with the war?
Then why does the Democratic Congress continue to do nothing but offer sound bites?

I am tired of hearing "we don't have the votes." Put it to a vote and find out whether you do or not.

The Republicans can shut up. The Democrats can put up or shut up as well.

50. The war did take less than a couple months, it is the occupation
that will go on for decades as they now tell us. We over threw the government in a matter of days. We went so fast that our supply lines could not keep up. People seem to confuse war with occupation. What we have now is a civil war with us in the middle. The occupation has failed because we failed to secure the weapons and the border. We had no plan except over throwing the government and protect the oil which was quite easy since they really had no army, no weapons and hope of defeating our well trained, well lead superior force.

Love your stuff Nance keep up the great work, my point is just semantics.

53. No, your point is well taken ...
The problem being the fact that this admin led their supporters to believe that once we rolled into Baghdad and toppled that statue of Saddam, that would be the end of it. The rest would be clean-up, reconstruction, hand-shaking and friends-for-life all around.

But it's STILL a war, for all intents and purposes. Our troops are still in combat, fighting to survive this complete fuck-up.

And thanks! :hi:

70. This reminds me of something I read this week....
in a blog about the GOP candidate debates: That it doesn't matter what any of the potential Republican nominees are saying--it's obvious none of them believe a word coming out of their own mouths.
