Did Dean ever belong to the DLC?
I keep reading posts that insinuate that Dean is the anti-DLC, but I thought Dean belonged to the DLC when he was still governor? Anyone know the answer to this question? Thanks in advance if anyone knows the answer.

Don

1. Yes

I dont know much about the falling out I hear about. Ive also heard the reason why he is not listed as a member is because of they dont list politicans who arent office holders. I dont know if thats true but I also have read about Dean's record, it does reflect the values of a New Democrat. I dont know honest for sure but he does seem to have the record of a New Democrat.

2. He did belong to the DLC and supported much of their agenda.
I ma not sure what went wrong. Dean was anti-medicare, pro-nafta, and some other opinions that don't match up to what he supports now.

15. I have been flamed before when I pointed out this little fact.....
about Governor Dean.

It seems that Dean's record does not match the rhetoric.

4. Yes.
He was once a DLC member during his years in the Governors Association.

However, he has distanced himself FAR from the DLC since two-years ago and the relentless attacks by the DLC leadership has burned all remaining ties to this organization and NDOL.

9. They kept capitulating to Bush on important issues
That would be my guess.

11. There were several interviews in early 2003.
Dean stated that the DLC leadership was not going to win new voters for Dems with old ideas.

Something to that matter....I cannot recall exact quotes.

I'm sure you can research...there are plenty of interviews from early 2003 to recall back on.

I know, I was pretty excited to hear it then.

5. Please do not spoil one of DU's cherished myths.
;) Of course, no one can deny that even if Dean was a DLC member, he's hardly playing on their team now. (He's not even playing their game, it would seem...)

10. We need to "Dump the DLC".
DLC = 2000 + 2002 = 0

6. The DLC moved right
They praised Dean a few years ago, although I haven't seen anything saying he was a member.

Then they moved right and they put Dean on their shit-list for not supporting the war, among other things.

7. Dean is anti-DLC in part because DLC was anti-Dean.
I don't believe he was ever a DLC member, but I am not 100% sure.

12. The DLC's issue with Dean was they didn't plan for him
And he didn't want to kowtow once he got ahead (rightly). On the issues, they should (and did) get along fine.

13. Yes, of course he was
State election results provide additional evidence of Democratic resurgence under New Democrat leadership. Centrist Governors Howard Dean of Vermont, Tom Carper of Delaware, Jim Hunt of North Carolina, and Mel Carnahan of Missouri all won re-election comfortably.

16. Dean was still close enough to the DLC to join in their annual meeting
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 09:40 PM by Tinoire
this June. Since then, as we all know, the relationship has deteriorated past the point of repair for not towing the party line.

Attendees:

    Senator Joseph Lieberman (CT)
    General Wesley Clark
    Governor Howard Dean (VT)
    Senator John Kerry (MA)
    Senator Bob Graham (FL)

Governor Bill Richardson (NM) - Annual Meeting Co-Chair
    Simon Rosenberg, President, NDN
    Representative Artur Davis (AL)
    Representative Bob Menendez (NJ)
    Representative Jane Harman (CA)
    Senator Blanche Lincoln (AR)
    Senator Mary Landrieu (LA)
    Scott Heiferman, CEO, Meetup.com
Sergio Bendixen of Bendixen and Associates
Candidate for Governor Joe Andrew (IN)
    Pollster Mark Penn

Videos, speeches, transcripts, agenda, etc can be found here: http://www.newdem.org/annualmeeting/

Note: Edwards not invited (due to a pretty bad row over NAFTA)
