Clinton Walks in Nurse's Shoes

Senator Hillary Clinton got a firsthand look at the life and work of SEIU member Michelle Estrada yesterday. Clinton worked a late-day shift with Estrada in the medical/surgical unit of a hospital in Henderson, Nevada, then joined Estrada and her family for dinner.

As part of SEIU’s program to ensure presidential candidates better understand workers’ everyday challenges, Sen. Clinton saw firsthand what it means to be a single mom working 12-hour shifts, caring for three children at home and several medical patients at work.

Sen. Clinton was the 5th presidential candidate to walk a day in a member’s shoes following Sens. Edwards, Dodd and Obama, and Gov. Richardson in recent months. Stay tuned for Sen. Biden and Gov. Huckabee.

2. Nurses do NOT have it easy. They risk disease, getting crapped on by
administration and patients (in more ways than one) and if their relief doesn't show up, they can be held over (or lose their license) by 'popular demand.'

I admire the work they do. It ain't easy.

9. I'm betting she'll spend tomorrow on her back on the floor
with her lower legs up on a chair, and she didn't even have to lift anybody.

50% of trained and licensed RNs have left due to working conditions.

Think about it, Mrs. Clinton.

13. Have any snarky remarks about Obama and Edwards?
They also did the same thing as Hillary did.

19. Wow. Impressive
Most people who are new to a health care job assume the position I described after their first shift on the job.

Running cement floored halls 12 hours at a crack does terrible things to our bodies.

21. They can get away with this abuse to our nurses because they
can import them for cheaper. It seems the more this issue is highlighted the more visa's become popular for nurses from the Philippines. I now that in Milwaukee at a Aurora hospital called St. Luke's nurse asked for money. A man who's title and hefty salary escapes me at this time, told these women to marry wealthy. A group of them dressed in wedding dresses and went to his office to ask for his hand in marriage. P.S. Nurses who earn their bachelors, graduate with more science credits than engineers with a Bachelors. Yet, in a few years time, the engineers salary exceeds those of nurses.

3. This part's really sweet.
The hospital was sometimes an awkward environment, with numerous journalists, plus sick people being wheeled around, and the Secret Service, but Clinton showed her usual ability, honed during 15 years of extremely public life, to make it seem like she didn't notice.

David Halloway was being wheeled away to have his gallbladder removed but asked to stop.

"I told my kids never to say goodbye. Say, 'See you later,'" said Halloway, a former Marine.

"See you later then," Clinton said brightly.

8. Thanks for that rkm.. Edwards does a good job..
Twelve hours a day at work is a very long day for both the nurses and the Health Care Aides... My mom is a nurse and my dad is a doctor. He's retired and she is still caring for elderly Alzheimer's patients. She loves her job and doesn't want to retire and will work as long as her health permits.

Hillary did a good job. She honed right in on the computer related aspects she's spoken about so often. I'm sure there will be followups on something she noticed on her working tour, an improvement on what she already aware of.

16. My hat is off to your mom. I'm an R.N. and taking care of
Alzheimer's patients is very tough, mentally and physically.

I change environments once in a while because burn out is rampant in this field

Hillary did a nice job. She can come spend some time with me. It would be a hoot.
