Lord, Have mercy, the mother load: A letter from Nancy Pelosi.
My letter to my friend Nancy follows her letter to me. See my tag for the executive summary.

Dear Friend,

Last November, the American people rejected years of Republican special-interest policies and misplaced priorities and put Democrats in charge of Congress. But, this was just the critical first step toward leading America in a new direction.

Now, we need your help to finish the job.

When I took the gavel as Speaker, I did so in the spirit of partnership -- to pursue policies that provide the American people with economic and national security that build upon the ideals and the values that make our nation great.

Democrats are working hard every day to build a bipartisan movement to set a new course in Iraq, address the long-neglected needs of America's working families and restore faith in our government. And in the U.S. House of Representatives, our Democratic majority has already passed landmark legislation breaking the link between lobbyists and legislation, making our nation safer and our economy fairer, expanding access to health care and higher education and standing up to * to oppose his dangerous and reckless escalation of the war in Iraq.

But, despite these successes, we still face an uphill battle getting many of our reforms past *'s veto.

To deliver on our commitment to the American people, House Democrats need your help to strengthen our majority and pave the way to help put a Democrat back in the White House. That's why I'm asking you to stand with our new House majority by joining the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) today.

Because you are a loyal Democrat, I have taken the liberty of enclosing your official DCCC membership card, which I hope you will carry with pride as we tackle the difficult challenges ahead. Please take a moment now to detach your card from your DCCC membership confirmation form -- and then return the form with your generous DCCC membership contribution of $15, $25, $35 or even $50 right away.

Our Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives urgently needs your support to implement our plan to move America forward.

In the first 100 hours of the 110th Congress, House Democrats have already passed legislation to implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations ... raise the minimum wage ... invest in promising stem cell research ... lower the cost of prescription drug prices by allowing the government to negotiate with drug companies on behalf of seniors in Medicare .. cut the interest rate on federal student loans in half ... and roll back multi-billion-dollar subsidies to Big Oil to fund development of alternative energy sources.

And despite *'s promise to work with the Democratic Congress, he continues to ignore our call for change and is pursuing the same failed policies roundly rejected by the American people last November when they elected a Democratic majority to Congress.

The only way to guarantee that the Democratic blueprint for change is put into action is to win big again in 2008 -- strengthening and securing our Democratic majority to advance our agenda.

That's why the DCCC needs your immediate help so we can give our 2008 candidates the early support they need to win.

As the official campaign arm of Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, the DCCC is America's only political committee primarily dedicated to electing Democrats to the House to stand up for the best interests of the American people.

Your generous support will help House Democrats step up our fight for the positive changes that America needs -- and put the Republicans on notice that the time has passed when they could overwhelm Democrats with a tidal wave of special-interest money. You will also enable the DCCC to strengthen our House majority in 2008 by recruiting the strongest possible challengers to take on vulnerable Republican incumbents.

With your help, our strengthened Democratic House majority will build on the success of our 100 Hours Agenda and move forward to lead America in a new direction by:

* Opposing *'s escalation of the war in Iraq and charting a new direction that gets our troops home quickly and safely.

* Taking swift action to put the brakes on global warming and achieve energy independence.

* Defeating any attempt to privatize Social Security.

To reach these goals, we are drawing on the traditional strengths of the Democratic Party -- our unwavering dedication to putting the interests of ordinary Americans ahead of greedy special interests and the knowledge that committed Democrats like you will stand with our Party.

So please do your part to enact our Democratic agenda for change -- by joining the DCCC with your generous contribution of $15, $25, $35, $50 or more today.

Thank you for supporting House Democrats at this critical time.

Sincerely,
Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House of Representatives

P.S. Our historic 2006 Democratic election victory was just the first step toward moving America in a positive new direction. Now we must follow through by enacting the bold agenda for change that swept us into power. Please let me know that my Democratic House colleagues and I can count on your help -- by joining the DCCC today with your most generous gift possible. Thank you.

Here's my letter back to my friend, Nancy.

Dear Nancy:

It is so good to hear from you. We've been calling you with an important message, but a lot of us cannot get through to you because we are not in your district. But, at least you took the time to write.

I'm afraid that I cannot keep enabling the enablers of the * Administration with a financial contribution at this time. I was so pleased to contribute during the 2006 election cycle because I thought there would be noticeable change in America. We are still occupying Iraq. We are still spied on by our government. Habeas Corpus is suspended. Detention centers are being built. The president continues to erode the Constitution, you know, what he called that "GD piece of paper" with executive orders to do such things as seizing a person's finances for protesting Iraq.

I could go on, but I don't want to bother you with life outside the gated community. You're a busy woman. But, you know how it is when you have a bad hair day? It's just that the bad day has gone on since 2000 when the Supreme Court stopped the counting of the votes in Florida or else "Candidate * would suffer irreparable harm." Other countries call this a coup d'état.

I do congratulate you on the first 100 legislative hours, though. Especially that part about 9/11 Commission recommendations because we may get to test those out. I don't know if you listen to Thom Hartmann, but he had a former Reagan official on his show and he said he thought the administration was going to let another attack occur on this country so that we rally behind him and the GOP again. I know that's tin foil hat material, but a growing number of us no longer believe the government's official conspiracy theory about 9/11.

Now, back to the matter at hand. That is, your trying to separate me from my money. Nancy, it's a poor return on investment. I'm all in favor of a big win in 2008. Have you considered using the collected evidence against this administration to turn the last 25% of the people against this administration and in so doing, insure massive Democratic victories in 2008?. Not to mention doing your job by upholding and protecting the Constitution. Remember that oath? It was to the Constitution, not to political expediency or the easy road. You'd have to get up on the impeachment table first, but you have a lot of people -- bipartisan support in the language you speak -- who would give you a hand up there.

And, Nancy, this is the kicker. If you first get behind HR 333 and remove Cheney -- who really is the president -- then you don't have to worry about the line of succession dilemma when you turn your attention to our king. Cheney is such a miserable creature, with approval ratings down as low as Congress' ratings now. The public could get behind removing Cheney when the evidence already collected shows all the mayhem that he's been behind. Besides, going after both * and Cheney together causes "how it looks" problems for you -- being that your 3rd in line and all.

Nancy, before I close, just one more point. Troops are dying everyday. So are Iraqi citizens just because they have the gaul to have our oil beneath their feet. You could end the occupation by removing those who keep it going. You could stop the assaults on the Constitution by removing from office those who keep abusing it. You could show the world that the American people do not agree with what this administration has done in its name and for their profit by bringing them before Congress with impeachment and a trial.

Get on that impeachment table.

Sincerely,
davidwparker

6. Notice there was NOTHING, NOTHING in that "100 hour" scam to do anything about the war.
that came at the insistence of anti-war activists, not originating in the Dem leadership. in fact good ol' rahm selected candidates who supported the war in Iraq... sometimes those candidates lost in the primaries... but if it were up to rahm and the leadership, the war would hardly be an issue.

Meanwhile, I'll give money to see Dems elected in 2008. It's not for Nancy after all, but for 2008.

In fact, I gave $50 the last time Kerry asked. It was superficially for his Senate campaign, but he's pretty safe in Mass. and I know what he did in 2006. He will do it again. Hence he gets money from me with which to work.

33. Returning to sender.
"LittleClarkie" is right: using e-mail "reply" sends it nowhere.

When you receive a Dem solicitation (DNC, DCCC, DSCC) in the mail send your reply in the enclosed envelope. Even if nothing more than a brief red marker message across the contribution form.

If you receive an e-mail solicitation, print out your reply and send it via snail to the address included.

From now on, every Dem solicitation I get will contain a reply as to why I won't contribute.

A few hundred thousand of these (dare we hope millions?) plus those teen Congressional approval ratings, and Pelosi/Reid & Co. might at last get the message.

In the meantime, find and support a progressive candidate to run in the primary against the Beltway Democrat in your district, or against your GOP Congressperson. Then contribute to that candidate, or to one of the few authentic progressives in Congress (e.g., Dennis Kucinich).

101. I think it's really about spreading the word. There seems to be more
people willing to withhold money from what I've read here and on other blogs. wearing t-shirts with Enough? etc.

It really is what will work if there's a shot at anything. Gee, how many people went to D.C. and around the country protesting the war and then when control shifted, nothing was done. We could stand out in the street all day apparently and not get heard.

If we withhold money primarily and turn our backs on those Dems who are enabling this administration, then that will send the message.

There are some fine Dems in the House. I think they have identified themselves by signing onto HR333. Support them if you wish.

I suppose each of us has to do what each one of us things is the right way to get this country back on track. Mine is withholding money, unsubscribing from their distribution lists, and writing "drivel."

I will show up to vote on 2008 and I will work for a local Dem candidate for the State House.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Too damn bad that she won't give it a read. The problem is that many Dems have their snouts so deep in the money/power trough, that they will do nothing to jeopardize it.Get elected, and then do nothing that might upset the flow of money!

I should state here that I don't believe that all Dems are like this, but HELL!!...do something about this admininstration already!

41. Great letter but you forgot the place where the infection starts: the voting machines.
Unless the Dems do something about it, that infection will corrupt every idealistic bone in every Dem's body. Why do we have Coleman rather than Mondale in the Senate? Why do we get whatzizname from GA instead of Max Cleland? Why did we get GWB again rather than JK in 04, even after JK won a near landslide victory at the polls?

Any country that counts the vote in total secrecy without verification, IS NOT A DEMOCRACY!

You might have reminded her of that rather obvious fact.

It's a good point to bring up when you speak to these people who think they own the Democratic base and are on top of all the issues yet don't seem to have any free brain cells to consider obvious crimes and misdemeanors that are right in front of their powdered noses.

109. great point and I agree. there was a caller on Randi's show yesterday
who was talking about public funding of campaigns. The caller is so right. And, we need to correct how we vote -- I vote for paper. It works in European countries. Thom Hartmann speaks a lot about the way German's vote. Exit polls tell you won. Then, after the manual counting, the exit polls are proven correct with a very tiny margin of error.

Guess that's why the media wants to discredit exit polling here.

48. My reply was less couched in niceities
Had to go to her site for the "list" of priorities and accomplishments.

No, Nancy, No!

Education is not our priority. Immigration is not our priority. Making the economy "fairer" is not our priority.

YOUR PRIORITY is getting these idiots out of the White House because until you can do that, the rest of the priorities are useless. YOUR PRIORITY is to DEFEND the Constitution.

You did not take an oath to the "economy", or "education" or any of these other things which, as absolutely admirable as they are in normal times, pale to the obligation to restore the rule of law to this country.

Do that, and then I'm all ears for the rest.

I apologize if perhaps I wasn't quite as eloquent as the original poster.

119. That wasn't the point and you know it.

And you read quite a lot into that phrasing, it seems, and your response, though colorful, misses the point.

Normally a fair economy is a top priority. But you think it's fair (or able to be fair) right now? Until these guys are out of office, you can forget a fair economy and all our other normal high ideals, because we can't make them happen with those people in the White House. Economic equality, a balanced budget, better minimum wages, no war in Iraq, correcting corporate budgets, de-coalescing media markets - she can talk about them all she wants but until she gets those people out of office, the rest is a waste of time, because Bushco is not interested in anything that doesn't directly benefits them in some fashion.

126. That was exactly the point
Nancy Pelosi doing exactly what Cindy Sheehan wants is the priority and nothing else is. Screw the poor. Screw SCHIP. Screw affordable health care. Cindy wants what she wants, so everyone else's concerns have to wait.

And, given that impeachment simply is not going to get Bush out of office- given the GOP critters in the senate- the ONLY thing impeachment would accomplish would be to make Cindy Sheehan briefly happy until she and her crypto-libertarian handlers find some other reason to attack Dems.

Minimum wage legislation was actually passed. Face it- there are a lot of progressive goals that have MUCH more popular support than impeachment, but if people are going to hold their breath and say "no economic justice until we have pointless impeachment motions", all you're doing is further empowering the plutocrats. And that's the goal of Cindy's handlers.

51. Don't give any money to Feinstein either
This a response to an email to Feinstein about impeachment.
Thank you for your letter concerning impeachment proceedings against Vice President Richard Cheney. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond.

In our most recent elections, the American people expressed clear disapproval with the path this country was on. They are tired of partisan politics and of an Administration that pays little heed to the wishes of the American people. They want-and deserve-a Congress that holds the Administration accountable and fulfills its Constitutional responsibility to check and balance the Executive branch. I share this sentiment and am determined to work hard and across party lines in the United States Senate to promote issues that are of real concern to most Americans, including the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, homeland security, global warming, and lobbying and election reform.

At this time, however, I believe that impeachment proceedings against President Bush or Vice President Cheney will only divide the country even further, frustrating our hopes for a meaningful change in direction, while having little chance of success.

I have been deeply disappointed by many of this Administration’s actions and have been outspoken in those instances. Nevertheless, given the challenges our country faces I believe that we need to focus on constructive and cooperative steps that would lead us in the right direction.

Again, thank you for your letter. If you have any further questions or comments, please contact my office in Washington, D.C. at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.

Sincerely yours,
Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

My reply back.

Dear Ms. Feinstein,
I am afraid I am going to have to seriously disagree with you on your assessment of the Cheney Impeachment situation. You state that impeachment proceeding would only divide the country even further. I don’t think so, over 70% of the American people favor The US leaving Iraq, yet Bush refuses to do so. You have the people behind you. Let’s not forget that this war was based on lies that members of Congress fell for when the blogoshere knew quite well about the lies well in advance, as did the 6 Million people worldwide who marched against the war on February 15, 2003. If you read my article from today then you now know what is currently going on. Impeachment may be your only chance, and our only chance.

You also said “I have been deeply disappointed by many of this Administration’s actions and have been outspoken in those instances.”

Then DO SOMETHING about it. That is your job. You have the power, use it. The American People demand nothing less.

Respectfully Yours
HL
United States Blogger

74. How do you
work across party lines with a party that marches in lockstep, blocking every attempt to do the people's will, and bargains in bad faith? The answer is you don't. You cut off the money for every criminal act this lunatic Administration wants to inflict on the civilized world. Failing to do so indicates unclean hands on the enablers.
When a child misbehaves, allowance is cut off. A temper tantrum is cause for grounding. Further abhorrent behavior results in expulsion from the residence and placement in a detention facility. Put these fuckers in jail.
Then again, putting the closeted Republican leadership in jail with other men might be a reward.
Picture Lindsey Graham in a wig and high heels wearing lipstick and ear rings swishing down the tier.
Not that that's a bad thing, but no one is that hateful without being self loathing.

Did you enclose a Deception Dollar while you were at it?

I did a check of the first 100 hours' legislation for a letter to our congresscritter.

I found that of the 6 bills only the minimum wage increase (from 1962 to 1979 levels, big fucking deal) and the egregious giveaway to the coal, nuclear, gas and hydrogen (pie in the sky) industries they called an energy bill have passed into law. Frankly, anything that isn't vetoed by shrub is highly suspect...

2 were deck chair on the Titanic crap -- "Ethics" tinkering.

2 are bottled up in the Senate and will be vetoed by the shrub if they ever get out of the Senate...

Big Fucking Deal...

-------------

Aw, Crap, I was just browsing and found a resolution passed honoring that great UNION BUSTER E. Gallo... This is the kind of crap our Congress seems to glory in ... At least Barbara Lee didn't vote for it...

If an overwhelming negative response from the American public meant the demise of New Coke after only 79 days, why why why is it taking so long for us to get rid of the Bush administration? Start writing some letters people. . . put pen to paper, slap on a stamp (I'm pretty sure they still cost less than a can of soda) and inundate our "representatives" with letters like this one. Sorry, but the emails won't cut it this time.

77. My only contribution this year has been to Howard, too
I'm not including stuff like Bobby Kennedy's environmental
movement, community radio, and stuff like that.

By the way, I don't know if this is obvious to all, but the
Senate cannot impeach. The Senate votes after an impeachment
trial has been conducted. The House impeaches, the Senate votes
on whether or not to convict. If you want to put it in courtroom
terms, the House acts as D.A. and the Senate is the jury who hears
the evidence and decides whether or not to convict.

I'm sure Feinstein and the rest (Holy Joe excluded) would vote to
convict IF the House were to impeach, but no impeachment, no trial.
No Senator can initiate that.

You may want to condense and send as a letter to the editor to a local newspaper. I do it all the time and the responses I get are awesome. It gets people thinking and INVOLVED. Thank you...your response was eloquent yet right on target! Even yesterday, they will deal with the contempt AFTER August recess!!!! What is wrong with this Congress in dragging their feet???

That Husband or I feel blue, we pick it up and read it.

Would it be so terrible to have a Speaker in The House who would make us VERY HAPPY??

Impeach.

And yes, K & R'd

It seems that our Dems in WA are attempting to run out the clock until the next election. I am sure, in the remaining months, this will give the administration ample time to wipe its feet on the Constitution a few more times.

138. Sure, we can all never give another penny
But what about today? What are u doing after work, this afternoon, evening?

We all must DEMAND our Rep. signs onto H.R. 333. Picket his local office, even if he's not there with signs like : "Not signing 333=Complicity" Go door to door, talk to your neighbors, of course it goes w/o saying their phone lines should be jammed with, "SIGN 333 NOW" calls.

We cannot depend on the corporate media to tell us Kucinich has 15 brave Reps. signed on and only needs a few more.

Is your Rep. a complicit coward? YOU can change that today and get investigations into cheney's impeachable offenses started..........then, as the media is forced to cover all the slimy evil rotting our nation we may just avert their long wet dreamed of police state, WW3 starting w/Iran, a new draft etc. Did you ever ask yourself how such a cultured and refined society as Germany in the 30's ever let itself be transformed into a monster? Look in the mirror good citizen, get up from your keyboard/couch and ACT.

141. Know what? I don't think it's so hot.
The fact is we DO need a bigger Dem majority in both houses of Congress to thwart the Pukes who can and have blocked us either by filibuster or veto.

So while you may feel proud of your smart-ass, snarky response, your attitude is just going to help get Republicans re-elected to Congress. You may feel righteously impatient and ideologically pure, but you're not helping your country.

Flame away.

149. I've never in my life used the term "keep your powder dry."
You do pick battles you can win. And you maneuver until you CAN win them, as Conyers showed just today.

Again, smart-ass-itude feels good, perhaps, but it doesn't get anything done.

As for a benchmark, if you will: the elections are next year. Let's TRY to get a solid majority then. How's that?

Until then, let's do what we can to get rid of BushCo or minimize the damage he can do.

Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 02:52 PM by pat_k
. . .working together -- is what Americans want. And they know they CAN'T get it when the "other side" has proven itself to be intolerably corrupt and destructive. Americans unequivocally rejected the bushncheneyism that has taken over the Republicans Party. The polls couldn't be clearer. Democrats won because Americans wanted them to get in there and OPPOSE and STOP the "other side."

We know the Democratic establishment is living in a created reality built on irrational assumptions. But sometimes the magnitude of their delusions, and their ability to hold onto those delusions in the face of challenge, knocks me flat.

I don't ususally don't even bother to read the letters. I get too angry. Just take out my red Sharpie and write some various of this message:

Impeach Bush AND Cheney Now

My dollars and time are going to
Elect Champions of Impeachment and
Defeat Impeachment Opponents.

Think of what it would do for their party.. If Bush and The puppeteer were gone, the '08 presidency race would be thrown into turmoil. It will shake up the whole order of the candidates on both sides. While I would love to see both criminals jailed, the Iraqi quagmire would allow the pukes back into the race.
