11. Our computers are the streets now.

The news media who used to report what was happening in the streets haven't done so for years now. Unless you are right there no one else is going to know nationally or even in the next county. The only reason Cindy Sheehan became a phenomenom was because her message was spread by computer. The news would have ignored everything including Camp Casey if it weren't for ordinary bloggers on computers who started the ball rolling.

We have to learn to use them more effectively and to reach many more other computer users who might be cruising EBay and other venues to get their attention. We have to keep the message up there always as if we were CNN. I don't know how we are going to do this yet, but if enough of us got our heads together some ideas might be born. This is how the revolution will happen, electronically. It's the only instant and universal communication, the powers haven't been able to shut down yet.

Everyone ranting and no one reading it will not change the world. Venting and fuming online is an exercise in futility.

We are all largely talking to those who agree with us here in DU and many other fora. Unlike a demonstration in the streets, in general terms, no one sees what is happening unless they are already in agreement. In this sense, the Internet is not unlike a pacifier, a great way to make sure the noise goes away.

That said, there are positive ways of using discussion groups. Unlike ranting, investigative reporting can have an impact. Information posted here is crawled by Google very quickly. While researching info to add to a compilation thread recently, the thread I was writing turned up near the top of Google before it was 12 hours old. Every journalist in the world uses Google search, I suspect. Investigate, investigate, investigate to make a change.
