The Republicans in the Senate are filibustering the Levin-Reed Amendment which would put a timetable on withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. According to reports, those that can count votes say the Levin- Reed Amendment would pass if a vote was allowed to take place resulting in a timetable for withdrawal bill to be placed upon the President's desk because the House has already passed a version of Levin- Reed.
The Republican leadership in the Senate have their marching orders from the White House - prevent a vote on the Levin -Reed Amendment from taking place. Majority Leader Harry Reid, recognizing the procedural tactics the Republicans are employing to prevent a vote on Levin -Reed, has decided that the Republicans cannot hide behind procedural moves any longer - if the purpose is to obstruct - he is forcing the Republicans to obstruct "openly";filibustering is obstructing openly.
Interestingly, the Democratic leadership is turning to blogs like this one to get the word out to Americans. Democratic leadership in Congress have put up youtube videos which I plan on embedding here for all to watch. In one of them, Senator Tom Harkin expressly appeals to those in the blogosphere to help spread the word of what is actually occurring at this moment in Washington.
Life imitating art: remember the scene from "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" where Jimmy Stewart is waiting to hear from supporters at home, trusting that his message will resonate with people who will understand what he is trying to accomplish, but "media barons and political bosses" a la Karl Rove in the '30s in the movie prevent Stewart's true message from getting out. The world wide web, the free "net neutrality" ( at the moment) of the internet allows us to bring the Democratic message to you today. So, after we bring the troops home ask your local Congressmen, Senators , State Reps, and State senators to support and protect "net neutrality".
That's another important issue. First things first however: let's bring the Iraq Occupation to a conclusion and bring our troops home.
