I think after the Wisconsin primary Gore will endorse Kerry
Gore is another Vietnam veteran like General Clark and John Kerry. I do think Gore will give Dean the option of dropping out with dignity first. But if he doesn't I believe he will pull his endorsement of Dean and make the switch to Kerry. Not because he doesn't like Dean, but because Gore is not an idiot. He is able to see the writing on the wall, and wants Bush gone as bad as I do. I may be full of beans, but I don't think so.

5. I'm sorry but, every thing does not boil down to..
black or white and right or wrong. There are always compromises to be made in life. We compromise from the day we are born. As a professional politician, Gore know that very well. Most adults do.

9. right
but why compromise when you dont have to?
why does he HAVE to fall in line?
please explain that to me.

I think Gores political life is close to over, atleast publically speaking, so I dont know what he'd have to fear. Hes already unlike by most clintonians these days.

3. It's impossible to know what Gore will do.
His endorsement of Dean was a sign of his evolution from mainstreamer to MoveOn-er. I think Gore has found a new constituency to be comfortable with, and it's a Dean continuency.

Dean constituency. Right now that constituency is at about 10% to 15%. To continue to cater to 10% when the other 90% of the democratic base would be very very foolish.

14. I'm suggesting that Gore will not switch endorsements before the
nomination. I would be very surprised--not just disappointed--if he did. He hasn't exactly been a terribly visible Dean supporter. I think he can just sit put and endorse whoever the nominee is at the convention. Switching support before the primaries are over would only call attention to the risk he took for Dean that didn't pay off.

You're asking Gore to dishonor himself when there is no reason to do so.

19. Gore Will Wait for Dean to Drop Out
and Dean will wait to see if the intern scandal explodes. If it doesn't, Dean is toast and he knows it. If it does, public opinion can turn on a dime, and it will be Dean vs Edwards.

i don't think Gore will be a turncoat like some of the opportunists in the party. Looks worse for the person changing endorsements than the candidate.

26. I think Gore pressuring Dean to drop out says it all already
Gore is a Democrat first. He knows the goal of this election is to defeat Bush more than anyone.

Dean said Wisconsin was a make or break state. Kerry is currently leading Dean by 42 points. Gore can read the writing on the wall.

28. This is another sad thread about distilling the goal down to beating bush
Whatever happened to voting for someone because they'll be a great president, because that person will represent those whose voices are always smothered under piles of money?

The Economist wrote, not very long ago, that no election has ever been won as a referendum against someone. Sorry, no link, it was a couple months ago. And what does it say to America, to the world, to offer the new resident in the Oval Office whose best qualification is that people perceived him as "electable" and that "he could beat bush." The lower bush's ratings go, the harder it will be to claim that any great victory was achieved. Maybe bush's ratings will nosedive into the single digits. What sort of achievement is it to beat that? This ABB mantra will be our undoing, whether we win or lose, because it delegitimizes the merits of a Dem winner and it destroys our perceived strength if bush wins.

As for Vietnam, if that's going to be a major pillar of the campaign, it will crumble before it has enough relevance. Rove and company have had 3 years to prepare their defense. They're not stupid, and they knew before any of us that kerry would use this election to launch his bid.

33. You mistakenly assume people don't see BOTH in Kerry
Making a great President and ability to beat Bush are not mutually exclusive.

Kerry wouldn't be perceived as someone who could beat Bush if he didn't have an exemplary set of credentials to go with it. He wouldn't be considered "electable" if voters did not view him qualifed to be President.

Again, it is presumptuous to assume that voters who choose Kerry are doing so because they are uninformed "sheeple" being led around by their noses, and that the only voters with values and principles are those that vote for Dean.

His name was Wesley Clark. What am I supposed to do now? Keep pining for something that will never happen? No. That is counterproductive. The choices before me now are Kerry or bush because they will be the nominees. Guess who I'm chosing.

34. Withdrawing an endorsement is pretty low.
Yet more evidence that there is not a single shread of integrity or backbone left in the democratic party. I thought endorsements were supposed to be about who a person thinks the best candidate is; now i see that it is all about getting on the winning side. Does anybody care that these things are observed by the voting public and demonstrate to them that Democratic party stands for nothing but political expediency? Such blatant opportunism does not speak well of the character of the person giving the endorsement, or the character of the democratic party. Some have said that this kind of behavior should be excused on the grounds of 'practicality' and 'realism;' well, i'm as practical and realistic as the next person, but the reality is that actions have consequences, and those consequenses may not be readily apparent in a day or a week. When a party repeatedly chooses self-serving political opportunism over principle, year after year, it undermines that party's ability to attract and maintain loyal supporters. The democratic party ought to control all three branches of government, but instead we have nothing, because short-sighted political opportunism can not sustain a party.
