Can working Americans afford Republicans any longer ?
In 1961 -- when a Democrat was President -- the minimum wage was $1.00 an hour and gasoline cost about 20 cents a gallon. A person making minimum could buy 5 gallons of gasoline for one hour of work.
In 1971 the minimum wage was $1.60 and gasoline cost 36 cents a gallon. A person on minimum wage could buy 4.44 gallons of gasoline for one hour of work.
By 1986 the minimum wage was $3.35. A gallon of gasoline cost 87 cents a gallon. A person making minimum wage cold buy 3.85 gallons of gas for one hour of work.
In 1992 the minimum wage was $4.25 and a gallon of gasoline cost $1.10. A person on minimum wage could buy 3.86 gallons of gas for one hour of labor.
Today, the minimum wage is $5.15. Gasoline in GA is $2.95 a gallon. A person on minimum wage cannot even buy two gallons of gas for one hour of labor.
Does anybody notice what has happened to the buying power of the poorest working people among us during 38 years of (primarily) Republican rule and deregulation ?
