Draft Gore group may put Gore on NH ballot
A small group, including a former adviser to Al Gore, met for lunch this week to discuss how they could get the former Vice President elected president.

The group casually met at the office of progressive business consultant Christopher Mackin in Cambridge on Wednesday, where they tried to figure out the best way to get Gore into the race.

"We all want Gore to run, but I wouldn't make too much out of our meeting," said Mackin.

John Pitkin, a demographer and blogger, said, "We discussed a wide range of options including different ways we could draft him into the race."

For example, Pitkin said, they could decide to put his name on the New Hampshire primary ballot and run a campaign without him or, more likely, create an online draft movement similar to how supporters of Wesley Clark urged him to get in the presidential race in 2003.

1. If he doesn't agree to run, they can only urge voters to write in his name, right?

Trying to figure out how that would work...

3. Been there, done that.

My PAC tried write in votes in NH in 2004 and a couple of other states and it didn't work. Al Gore even stated on Larry King that drafts do not happen anymore. And I personally after that experience am done with harrassing this good man to run for anything, especially after his correct comments regarding this political system and his comments that he has fallen out of love with politics. If he really wants it he knows how to get it and I think he knows better than we do what must be done and I also think his wishes should be respected.

4. The difference between this year and this time in 2003.
Is that Gore had already ruled out a run.

5. I don't understand why everyone thinks Gore will beat the other ones so easily
if he runs in the primaries.

Al Gore is everyone's sentimental favorite for sure, including mine, but I highly doubt he'd have an easy time winning the primary, and I don't think he'd win the general election as easily as someone like Obama would...or even Hillary or Edwards for that matter.

The country is looking for a fresh face. That much seems certain.

10. Try making a point instead of just "BWAaaa"ing. "BWAaaa" is beat, btw.

15. That's funny, since you do so much "BWAaaa"ing yourself.
Gore isn't even running yet and he's tied with Edwards in the polls.

That alone is proof he'd be a hell of a formidable opponent if he ran.

18. You've got the wrong poster, pal, so bwaaa up a wall if you want. As for Gore I'd put him in the WH
if I had a genie grant me only one wish. I love the guy. That doesn't mean I think he'd have as easy a time winning anything as what prevailing sentiment on DU believes.

As far as "BWAaaa"ing, lol, I've never used that particular expression, so you must be thinking of someone else. Either that or your just looking for some trouble, eh. Whatever tickles your fancy.

9. I'm not impressed with any of the Dem "fresh faces"
I prefer Al Gore and his experience and vision to lead us over the inexperienced "fresh" faces.

12. Why can't people leave the man alone???
If he wanted to run, he would be in the race already.

16. Why do people second-guess Gore?
He hasn't ruled out a run yet. At this time in 03 he had already said "No" to a 2004 race.

If he wants to stop these people from drafting him, he certainly can. But he hasn't yet, and that's telling.

13. None of the candidates inspire me
Edited on Mon Apr-30-07 11:38 PM by Marrah_G
Gore gives me a sense of hope for the world and the possibilty of real wisdom returning to the White House. None of the people running make me say "Now that is what a president should be".

There is alot of damage to be fixed, here at home and abroad. We don't just need a "good candidate", we need someone with the inate intelligence and wisdom to turn things around as well as someone who is respected by the rest of the world.

14. What if Gore doesn't want to run or be president?
I'm wondering. I thought about supporting him last summer when it became apparent to me he did not want to run or be president. since then, I see people talking about it but, I see him so happy and full of purpose. Doing what he wants and when he wants. So, I wonder, what if he really does not want to be president...what then.
curious is all.

19. Gore is the best person for the job
Al Gore is the best person for the job, in terms of his experience, knowledge, intelligence and judgement.

I am dreaming of a Gore-Obama ticket in 2008. But there is no hurry for Gore to enter the race.

I think Al Gore is keeping his options open right now, watching how the "pre-season" goes. I don't think he yet knows what he will do. My guess is that the chance of him entering the race is somewhere between 20% and 35%.

Gore's current line - "I have no plans to be a candidate" - tells us that right now (today) he has no plans to run. But it doesn't prevent him from changing his plans and making new plans during the coming months.

Gore is doing a great job raising public awareness about the climate crisis, with An Inconvenient Truth winning the Oscar for best documentary, and lots of attention around the Congressional Hearing on March 21st.

Gore is getting ready to bring out his next book The Assault on Reason - to be published on May 22nd. The theme of this book - why we need better decision-making in government - is very timely (whether he runs or not).

Gore is also leading Live Earth with concerts across the globe on July 7th -- all with the aim of raising awareness and pushing for action to address the climate crisis.

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision (or if you prefer - "change his mind") sometime in the fall.

It all depends on the circumstances. In September, if the race for the Dem nomination is still wide open and Hillary's campaign is in trouble, it might create the conditions for Gore to enter the race.

Don't forget that Bill Clinton did not kick-off his campaign until October 1991. But Al Gore already has nationwide respect and name recognition that other wannabees can only wish for!

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

"If (Al) was going to run in the future, of course I would support him. I think he'd be a fantastic president. He already got a majority of votes of people in this country once, and so that says something."
