"The New Orleans company is question, Full Motion Productions has stated that they were a subcontractor of Sausage Internet Services of Blaine, Washington. The blogger, Mr Zombie erroneously stated that the internet company was local to New Orleans, which they are not.

According to Open Secrets.org, which publishes FEC reports on their web site, the Edwards campaign made two payments in January to Sausage Software, one for $24,388 and a second for $7,288

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/expend.asp?ID=N00002283&cycle=2008&Sort=N&Page=20
If, as claimed by the representative of Full Motion Productions, Sausage Software has claimed that they haven't received payment from the Edwards campaign, they are lying. Whether the payments are related to the work Full Motion Production did (and they do fit the time frame in question) I have no way of knowing.

The bottomline, as other have noted, is that the dispute appears to be between the contractor (Sausage) and Sub-Contractor (Full Motion). While Full Motion can and should inform the Edwards campaign of their difficulty with Sausage and discourage the Edwards campaign from doing work with Sausage again (and actually the Edwards campaign appears to have not done business with Sausage since January) the legal dispute is between Full Motion and Sausage and the terms of their contract."

Thank you. I was looking at Open Secrets in the wrong section.

43. There is still the issue of the unreturned contact efforts
Why wouldn't someone from the campaign at least respond and say something like, "Hey! Your parent company has been paid (as of such and such date). Your complaint is with them, not us. We'll be happy to call them and ask them to pay you."

93. no, we are not 'too much'
it's not that complicated: somebody didn't get phone calls returned, and you, or others, make it sound like Edwards is shafting the city of New Orleans after he has used it for his own self-promotion, a pretty serious charge.

You are the one that suggested that the 'shafting' still holds because some cat didn't get his phone calls returned. This is what is commonly understood to be a smear, in any current meaning of the phrase.

Edwards supporters object to this.

Someone here is 'too much', but it ain't us.

I can not believe you don't understand what is going on here.

Find something real to spread your dislike of Edwards. This fake stuff is not cutting it.

95. I never implied that Edwards shafted anybody....
I've hardly said anything about this whole thing except to voice concern that the guy gets paid from someone. I never even suggested that it was Edwards' fault that he didn't get paid. I just suggested that the whole thing could have been avoided had the guy gotten a phone call returned. How that's a smear is beyond me but apparently you feel some deep seated need to call it that and to hurl accusations at me so go for it....I hope it makes you feel good.

Peace.

97. If you didn't call it a 'shaft'
then I apologize. But you can see what it feels like a continuation of the accusations in the previous thread.

In the context of that thread (to which this thread is the corrective/correction) which was unabashedly saying that Edwards had screwed the city of N.O. by not paying some guy and not returning his calls, it is understandable that when you say 'he could have avoided this by returning the calls' sounds like an endorsement of the previous false accusation.

In answer to you belief that I have deep seated need to call your post a smear: I don't. Nor do I get pleasure from 'hurling accusations' at you, if I even did. This site is the most negative aspect of my day, every day I visit. This is not pleasurable.

By the way, It is noted down-thread that the guy calling Edwards campaign was never hired by the campaign, but was hired as a subcontactor by the principal contractor (who was paid by Edwards, but who did not pay the subcontractor).

So, if you're the Edwards campaign and you get calls from someone you don't know, demanding payment for something that you already paid someone else for, why would you call them back? It's not even a matter of decency or courtesy. I think I'm pretty polite, but I wouldn't answer calls demanding payment from someone I don't know, for work or services I already paid for.

The initial thread is so ugly, and such a ghastly accusation (photo-op in hurting New Orleans, then shafting the people you supposedly care about in their hour of need), that Edwards supporters are understandably annoyed, and even fatigued, at this sort of stuff.

84. Just a thot. If the 1st contractor hasn't paid them...
maybe the 1st contractor never told Edwards campaign they hired a sub-contractor.

So without that information actually in a contract it might be difficult for the Edwards campaign to step in and be helpful.

I agree, there are manyyyy other things that rich republican candidates do that could/should be publicized but they say nada!!! there is a huge campaign, with PAID individuals spewing out this crap against the Dem candidates because they know Rethug voters only make up about 30% of people now, so they have to go hard on the 3 or 4 Dem candidates that have a great shot of being the Dem nomination... I got a Hillary/Black Panther email yesterday from my Repub friend that I wrote back - it's LIES, read snopes.com - I haven't heard back from her, and I got the Obama email about his Arabic upbringing, from a diff Repub friend who at least asked me what I thought of it... my fave is John *unless Gore comes in* and they LOVE to attack him almost more than Hillary, because he's a white male, and very handsome for his age, and the last time I checked only white men have been elected president... maybe that'll change this time, but it's not something we should forget why they call him faggot and attack him right & left! 60. He's addressed the issue:
An Addendum

To whom it may concern:

I did a little bit of research via OpenSecrets.Org On Democratic Underground a representative of FullMotion Production said that they were a subcontractor of an internet services company called Sausage located in Washington state (not a local internet company as stated in the previous post). On Open Secrets, a web site that posts FEC filings for candidates, Sausage received two payments from the Edwards campaign in January. One for 24,388 and a second for 7,288. The actual information can be found here

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/expend.asp?ID=N00002283&cycle=2008&Sort=N&Page=20

If, as indicated, FullMotion was a subcontractor of Sausage, then they do have evidence that Sausage has received payment for services from the Edwards campaign. Since, their contract is with Sausage and not the Edwards campaign, there probably is little the Edwards campaign can do for them, aside from no longer doing business with Sausage, if they refuse to pay FullMotion. Unfortunately, it appears that FullMotion may have to engage in legal action against Sausage if Sausage has failed to satisfy the terms of the contract.

This is correct. I was not aware that there was a subcontractor involved between the Edwards campaign and our local guys, I just confirmed this with the FullMotion guys. FullMotion is a local company....Sausauge Software is in Washington State.

Also, on the Dem. Underground site this statement was made:

"The New Orleans company is question, Full Motion Productions has stated that they were a subcontractor of Sausage Internet Services of Blaine, Washington. The blogger, Mr Zombie erroneously stated that the internet company was local to New Orleans, which they are not.

I didn't say that...Full Motion wasn't the only local company contracted. There was a second local internet company contracted which hasn't been paid either. I wasn't referring to Sausague Software...I didn't even know there was a Washington state company involved at the time.

So the Edwards campaign apparently did pay Sausage who is in turn stiffing our local companies. I partially apologize to the Edwards campaign...it still doesn't explain why they wouldn't even respond to our local company's emails and phone calls. I'm not letting them completely off the hook though....I still feel they have some responsibility on the matter. I would hope they would at least contact Sausage and try to get our folks paid. I will fully apologize if the companies receive payment.

On a separate note, the other thing I learned is that Edwards' supporters are bat shit insane.

I recommend you read Mark Crispin Miller, the chief investigative journalism covering election fraud.

His book recounts the end of election battles in the Democratic Party. Check it out.

More recently, he believes that among current candidates Edwards is the only one fighting for election reform in any serious way.

You're barking up the way wrong tree. You don't like Edwards. Fine. Quit spreading false stuff, and maybe you'll bring others over to your side.

"how dare you say anything bad about my candidate - you bad, bad person? They are oh so very gracious, and you so crass"

No one said anything like that. The point is that several of you were quick to jump on this story and treat it as gospel, or at least as an excuse to trash Edwards, without any idea whether it was true or not. This is precisely the same approach that the Swiftboaters took, spreading a rumor and acting as if it's true. ALL of the Democratic candidates deserve more respect than that. Furthermore, don't act as if the supporters of one candidate are somehow different than the supporters of any other. Obama's supporters don't appreciate smear campaigns any more than Edwards' do. Nor Hillary's, or anyone else's. Treat people with respect and you will receive it in kind.

I mostly jumped because your attitude "F* the little guy - this is Edwards we are speaking about" blew my mind with the contempt you guys have for people. Those were the posts from people who considered the possibility that someone didn't get paid. As long as it was St Edwards doing the non-payment - it was justified. And that remains, no matter what this story turned out to be.

55. your mistake
See, your mistake is in thinking that the poor unpaid schmuck counts, Count. He's not even importnat enough to warrant a response from the campaign. Perhaps it's the price of living in the wrong America.

It might be an unpopular sentiment here, but I do hope those companies get some response and some payment from someone soon.

89. BUT, What You DID... Was Go ON & ON & On & ON & ON...
and as "venable" says... go back and take a look at the thread. And unfortunately, this thread isn't the first time you've gone on & on & on!

I myself, just don't want to argue with you about it because it's pretty evident you don't like Edwards. That much is JUST FINE, you don't HAVE to "like" or "support" him, nor do any of us have to support any other Democrat.

What my real problem is that we just keep attacking our own candidates and from where I'm sitting, no MATTER WHAT, it just doesn't seem (and I'm not Jewish) but it just doesn't seem "kosher!"

Perhaps the next time you could ASK a question FIRST, like IS THIS TRUE, before you post it as fact. I think that would go down much better. IMHO!

That's just me...

79. What would be a great night for ME
would be going through an Edwards thread and not see the same person attacking him. It's amazing, that one person doesn't miss a single thread (that I've seen, anyway), and I'm not even an Edwards supporter...at least not yet. I mean, speaking of "starting to wear thin", and "spending all day bashing".

I'm still hoping Gore will run, and have not decided who I'll support if he doesn't. I'm curious about ALL the candidates and get REALLY exasperated when this kind of wingnuttery smear gets pushed on DU.

Thanks for the great effort. I wouldn't have know how to find that info for myself.

I haven't settled on a candidate myself, but I have a huge respect for John & Elizabeth. The primaries seem to bring out the worst in some. I really try to stay away from the flame threads, but thanks for putting this lie to bed. I read that other thread, and I find it hard to believe we can be so vicious to each other. It just leaves really bad lingering feelings when these primaries are over.

Thanks again for your diligence & quick research. I did notice, however, that even when this particular lie was debunked, instead of conceding that it was a lie, the poster just obsessed about the $400 haircut? Give me a break.

not paying promptly and stiffing vendors. I've seen it for my own eyes, unfortunately, when I worked on congressional campaigns.

27. I was a paid part-time staffer for my district's Democratic

Congressional candidate in last year's election campaign. (He lost the race, BTW) The campaign put off paying large invoices during a reporting period to show having as much cash on hand as possible. I was also asked if I would make "in-kind" contributions by "donating" some of my time. I was even asked if I would agree to some delays in pay days if it fell close to a reporting deadline. Needless to say I declined to do any of the things they asked because the staff that were paid the big bucks were never asked to do these things.

I found out cash on hand is king in campaigns-it doesn't matter if it's huge national campaigns or "local" congressional campaigns. While the candidates themselves may not be asking for contributions in-kind or may not be aware which invoices are outstanding, there is probably someone on their staff who is.

Checking JE's latest FEC filing would show if this production company has been paid during the 1st qtr or not. If there is any truth to this story I do hope they get paid. I saw for myself some vendors who did outstanding work who waited 6 months or more to get paid.

66. Yes, I do know that is true.
I managed a campaign last year and every media buy we made was cash up front. They know full well that campaigns are transient.

Though I didn't play the cash on hand game. I stacked up cash throughout the campaign spending as little as possible. Then, at the end, I was a spending fool! Spent almost every last bit of it on media. It was great to have the cash to do it.

Good for you for sticking to your guns on the campaign you mentioned. There is no place where one can be taken advantage of than the political arena. I speak from experience.

AmericanZombie is a complete buffoon, the entire site is journalistic group masturbation. One blogger says something, the next one quotes it, so the the third one takes it as fact. These guys are so detached from any sense of reality. Don't wait for an apology, he is unable to make one and he often censors the comments to his blog to put him in the best possible light.

May I call you "Rex"? :-)

It certainly is a load off my mind to hear that JE isn't the villain here. (Do note that this all came about because he's the only candidate to campaign in N.O. so far.)

I just heard back from the Zombie. His remaining concern is that, even though Sausage and not the Edwards campaign is to blame, Edwards may still find it difficult to hire local production crews if/when he returns to the city. Word gets around very fast in the small community of video producers down there. Oh yes, it turns out that he's leaning toward... Edwards.

Sorry to have created such a colossal mess, but before the Sausage connection surfaced, it sounded really, really ugly.

Good night and good luck. Aloha! </olbermann>

99. We are not threatening Edwards. He simply tells me the tale that he's been told.
Unfair? Yes. But once someone acquires a reputation as a deadbeat, justly or (as in this case) otherwise, it's never easy to re-establish credit, whether you're a political campaign or a credit card holder who's been socked by medical bills (i.e. just the kind of person Edwards stands up for!)

Why would AZ threaten Edwards? He's for Edwards!

Besides, JE's not doing that poorly in fundraising; next time he's in NOLA, which I hope will be soon, he can pay cash.

In closing, let me reiterate that the King's work in getting to the bottom of this is just what DU is all about. :yourock:

100. Ok, well, which blogger with initials AZ started the rumor Edwards was a deadbeat?
Answer me that one, please.

You say that once someone gets a deadbeat reputation it is not easy to establish credit. You said he should pay cash.

SO....who called Edwards a deadbeat to begin with when it was a total lie. And who is refusing to be gracious about being wrong.

Your words:

"But once someone acquires a reputation as a deadbeat, justly or (as in this case) otherwise, it's never easy to re-establish credit, whether you're a political campaign or a credit card holder who's been socked by medical bills"

Tell me, who started the rumor? I didn't. Edwards paid his bill so he is an innocent in all this. Best to be gracious and quit saying his reputation will be damaged when it was damaged by the person saying it.

I hope you are following me on this. You spread a rumor, and now it is being made worse by implying that Edwards has a bad reputation there in New Orleans.

There is just so much wrong with that.

You're SOOOOOOOOOO much better at this than I am, I'll be here for support and am sorry I'm not as good at doing the digging, but I have "limited" time because we have my mother-in-law (95 with Alzheimers) to care for.

PLUS, I'm trying to attend all local rallies I can regarding Impeachment, Anti-War, etc.! Sarasota looks to be having an Impeachment Rally this coming week-end and I'm trying to get a group together for it.

Looks like St. Pete is going to be having an actual PLANE flying in the air, with an IMPEACH Bush Banner. So far I think there are 3 planes flying. I signed up with a relatively new group called A28 and they have been making some very good progress.

While I'm not completely sure about "impeachment" given my area any rally, meeting or march needs "people" attention! Took my granddaughter to the March 16 March on the Pentagon and it SNOWED on us. Froze our butts off, but we had GREAT fun. I want to start them young and for me jumping into the fray is the best way I know how to get them interested!!

If he's so concerned about the people of NOLA, why didn't he use this information as leverage to make things right with the Edwards campaign? Why, instead did he just toss one of our own to the Rape-Publican smear machine like so much sharkbait, without even bothering to check the Internets (where it was debunked quite easily)?

This guy strikes me as either vengeful or irresponsible - and a coward for lobbing grenades from behind an alias. Or a Rovian tool.

96. I Suspect He Falls Within One Of Your Definitions... But He Also Is
no Edwards supporter, which is fine. I mean why should WE expect anyone to fall "in line" behind any one candidate at this point in time?

But for me, the bigger question is... WHY simply make such a concerted effort to "flay" OUR candidates this far in advance of 2008??

I'm more upset by the fact that for some reason, the level of animus has begun so early and is so VITRIOLIC!!!

I was asked questions regarding my response, but chose not to respond in a negative way because I didn't want to fuel the fire. I will have to say that there were/are others who are far more qualified than I, who took him on and did a very good job in a very intelligent way to get to the bottom line.

I find that appropriate and welcome... but for myself, when I see this stuff it only makes me want defend Edwards and I suppose I would feel that way if I was experiencing the same stuff, if I saw it happening to any other candidate that I might support who was getting attacked all the time. And yes, I know Hillary gets attacked a lot... I can't find it in me to defend her as I do Edwards, but if she was who I was supporting... I WOULD come to her defense.

I recently entered my SIXTH decade in life, and you know what.... I didn't get my PERFECT BUTTON YET!!
