Obama's team just called me---assured me Gore wasn't running
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 03:24 PM by greenbriar
told them he was my man if Gore doesn't run...

them... Gore is not running...he has a cloud...

I said uh hum...we will see

they want money.

Told them I would donate later, but I wanted assurance that he wouldn't lay down and take the swift boats, the gop smears, ect...

He "assured" me Gore wasn't running. I told them I know more than he did about the state of the country...

told them that the current t-shirt I was wearing said "I ONLY SLEEP WITH DEMOCRATS...

told them to call me later

2. How do they know for sure?
If Obama's fundraisers are using those tactics, then that is 10 demerits for his campaign, as far as I am concerned.

and ask for donations (although I'm sure they got a kick out of you).

29. when I set up fundraising phone banks
... volunteers were most definitely given a script and an overview of the candidate's positions for reference ... and a stern admonition of what not to say.

I think Obama's campaign would appreciate hearing this vignette.

4. I hope this is not how they hope to recruit supporters.
This would certainly be enough for me to hang up the phone, and Obama is my favorite among the three frontrunners.

It is their job to read a script and to ask for money.

You do not need to attack other Dems to make your point.

11. How do they "know" that Gore is not running?
Al Gore has not ruled it out completely himself. I don't think he's going to run, but you never know. I'm also not enthralled with any of the current crop of Dem Prez candidates, so I take my time to choose.

13. Gore
I agree that Gore has stated he is not running. However, I am just confused as to the statement above where the caller brought up Gore. Callers on campaigns does not tend to bring up another candidate's name. Therefore I was wonderly how Gore's name came into the conversation.

15. It's obvious that the caller went off script.
That doesn't mean that Obama's "team" approves of a call like that. Maybe calling the campaign and letting them know that someone is calling saying those things will help stop it.

20. Having managed some volunteer callers in campaigns before...
You're working with volunteers, especially this early in the race.

It is very hard to manage people who want to feel important and chat with callers and go off script initially. You're usually too busy doing other things like setting up databases, getting campaign merch, training others or being in meetings.

Usually the phone bank room is away from the action (which is not really that exciting most of the time), so unless you're listening to them call or are in the same room, it's a matter of letting someone you trust within the phone bank group to report to you anyone who is either abusive, a slacker or one that goes offscript...or worse, tells callers issue talking points that the campaign doesn't comply with or attacks on other candidates.

I've seen it all...especially the issue talking points where the phone bank person is woefully uninformed or belligerent to the other person on the line.

Training is key and having someone in the phone bank room who's getting paid to monitor behavior, lists and order food and such is critical.

23. I got a call from Obama's people last week
Edited on Sun Mar-11-07 04:48 PM by LiberalFighter
I wasn't happy about getting the call mainly because they weren't identified on my Caller ID.
I was polite but firm about not wanting to contribute to anyone yet.

I let loose verbally on someone who claimed to be Verizon Wireless twice for calling and they were Caller Unknown too.

One of the talking heads said Obama is hitting up all those on HRC's donors list right out of the box.

I have to say, Obama is sporting a pair and the thought of that makes me smile. This guy is prepared to play hardball and take no prisoners.

Gobama.

Disclaimer: If given the choice, I will support Al Gore in a heartbeat.

27. politics is a chess game in real-time
Too many people confuse the emotional response to issues and causes with the actual game of politics which is skillful maneuvering of players. DU too often succumbs to cults of personality and misses the bigger picture of watching the field move and groove. It's fascinating. When you can tip your hat to a "smooth move" regardless of who made it, then you are officially detached enough to appreciate the process.

Obama is most definitely a contender.
