My letter to Senator John Ensign today (we are acquaintances):

Senator John Ensign
119 Russell Senate Office Bldg.
Washington, DC 20510

March 8, 2007

Dear Senator Ensign,
You might remember me. Or perhaps not. I was one of the teaching assistants for your freshman microbiology class in veterinary school at Colorado State University in the fall of (year), and I certainly remember you. This, plus the fact that I am and have been for the past 24 years a resident of California, might be sufficient grounds for you to discard this letter and with it my opinion. But please bear with me for a moment.
I was born in Washoe County General Hospital in Reno. My father was born in Ely, White Pine County, in (year). My grandfather was born in (year) on the George (last name) homestead in the Snake Valley at the turnoff to the dirt road to Silver Creek Reservoir on what is now Highway 6/50. My great-grandfather came to the Snake Valley alone in 1880 at the age of 16 and was the first rancher to run cattle up on Bald Mountain and Wheeler Peak for summer pasture. My grandparents raised 6 boys, of whom my father was the youngest, on the last lonely little hardscrabble ranch where Weaver Creek peters out in the sagebrush north of Baker.
As a child I spent innumerable vacations in White Pine County, where my grandparents lived until they died – where my twenty-some (last name) cousins grew up to become miners and mine engineers, ranchers and housewives – where my Uncle (first name) had his long career as a State Brand Inspector – where my grandfather, (full name), was a White Pine County sheriff and Ely’s Chief of Police. My father left Nevada for college in Colorado (at our alma mater) and then a highly decorated career in the USAF, but he always considered himself a Nevadan. And so do I. You can take the girl out of Nevada, but you can’t ever take Nevada out of this girl.
Before I get to the purpose of this letter, in all fairness I must give you credit where credit is due. I have read your summary of the White Pine County Conservation, Recreation, and Development Act of 2006 and applaud your efforts in this regard. Though it would be nice to keep the area as I have always known it, I accept that this is not realistic. What I do know is that too many young people have had to leave this beautiful land, as my father did, in order to have any future at all. A larger tax base, larger population (within reason), and more jobs would allow more of my extended family, which includes Bakers, Smiths, Hesselgessers, Tilbys, Hickmans, Meachams and countless others, to stay right where they want to. My generation has spread to the four winds, and it’s a family tragedy. Please continue to keep an eye out for the well-being of this forgotten corner of America that my heart still knows as home.
Now to my point in writing to you: I note with some interest your dissatisfaction with the firing of Nevada’s US Attorney Daniel Bogden. According to The Las Vegas Review-Journal you are not happy with how you were misled by the Justice Department. I know full well how supportive you always have been of George Bush and his plans for this country.
Now that you have tasted the bitter fruit of those plans do you feel the same? Do you feel betrayed? Do you feel cheated? Do you perhaps even feel just a little bit afraid? Remember the old joke that ends “You knew I was a snake when you picked me up”? Remember this poem from your history lessons?

First They Came for the Jews……..

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

--- Attributed to Pastor Martin Niemoller

They have come for the Jews, when they came for the Muslim “terrorists” who languish without benefit of trial. They have come for the Communists, when they came for the “commie pinko liberals” who dissented. They have come for the trade unionists, when they came for the United States Attorneys who asked too many questions. And now, John, they will come for you, and the other Republicans from whose eyes the scales are falling.
Are you happy now, John?

Sincerely,

(full name), DVM (CSU ’(year))

Yes, I know the format is hinky. It's normal format in the letter. I don't do HTML. I sent the letter by snailmail as I am not legally a constituent.

I wrote it on my professional letterhead.

3. That was a great letter!
Thanks for sharing! Let's hope the scales do drop from his eyes--and other's eyes too. I will say that my doc, a lifelong Republican, voted with the Dems the last two times because, as she said, "Bush and company have left the Republican Party."

Great letter. I donated to Jack Carter's campaign and got a "personal" thank you from him :loveya: I wish the results turned out differently.

The intro is very interesting, and when you come out swinging at the end, it's quite an impact.

and from a happily, displaced native Nevadan whose family history in Nevada began in Goldfield. Oh the stories my family wouldn't tell me.

Great letter!

Wonder if we're kin? I've got literally hundreds of second and third cousins I couldn't even begin to name (that Mormon heritage, you know, lol).

23. LOL
Yeppers, I sure do know what you mean about Mormon heritage. My maternal grandfather is originally from UT and was LDS.

I bet if we looked long and hard enough, we could find kin; or at the very least kin who were neighbors. :D

Quick, funny story. My aunts and uncles bought a cabin for my grandparents (their parents) as a getaway. Only problem, my grandparents' neighbors from in town had the same idea and bought a cabin down the road for their getaway. Neighbors in town, neighbors out-of-town. Small world back then. :D

:hi:

26. Holy COW, that's a GREAT letter, and a STELLAR OP.
BRAVO!!!

Just great!!!

Superb!!!

And your questions are really excruciating, piercingly good: Do you feel cheated? Betrayed? Maybe even a little bit afraid? If he's anywhere near clear-headedness, he ought to, but then again, these republi-CONS are awfully good at putting their consciences and objective reasoning in the deep freeze. REALLY good. I hope he's squirming. "You knew I was a snake when you picked me up." BRILLIANT!!!

27. Thank you. I'm not certain he will ever lay eyes on the letter,
however. I sent it on my business letterhead and marked the envelope "personal". As a veterinarian, even though I am not technically a constituent, I suspect it will get flagged for special attention. It will have to go through the anthrax screening facility, lol. Then it will have to make it past his lackeys, who may toss it because it's not fawningly supportive.

So who knows? I kind of doubt he'll bother to reply...........

28. Looks like John may still be unhappy..............
From the WaPo:

Senator John Ensign(Nev.) has emerged as perhaps Gonzales's toughest GOP critic in Congress. He remains furious that his state's U.S. attorney, Daniel Bogden, was dismissed for no apparent reason other than a desire, expressed in congressional testimony by a Justice aide, for "new blood."

Ensign summoned Gonzales to his Senate office on Thursday to discuss the matter, and Gonzales also dispatched Deputy Attorney General Paul J. McNulty to talk with Ensign, according to aides. Ensign, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told Nevada media outlets earlier in the week that he could not "tell you how upset I am at the Justice Department." Yesterday, after the Gonzales and McNulty meetings, he declined to comment on the issue.

that this East Coaster enjoyed reading and a passionate letter. Let's hope you got to his conscience with this. It's so well written ....how could it not!

Like that part about: "You knew I was a snake, when you picked me up." :D I wonder how many Repugs would find that SO true these days.

32. I have done some snooping on the internets............
and have found some interesting tidbits about Senator John Ensign (R-NV).

I knew that he had casino connections, but WOW - his father is Michael S. Ensign, CEO and COO of the parent company of Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur (a crappy, cheezy place, BTW) and a bunch of other casinos including the places out in Jean. MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!! John is a big supporter of gambling interests, to say the least.

Curiously, the Senator claims to be a Pentecostal, his bio says he is a member of a Foursquare Gospel church, and he lives in DC at the whackadoo haven known as C Street Center with, among others, Senator Brownback of KS. He makes like a RW Christofascist, but supports gambling and probably stands to inherit a HUGE estate of gambling proceeds when dear old dad passes. Fits right in with the mandatory hypocrisy in today's Repubic Party.

And about dear old dad: John's mom was working in Vegas as a lowly casino cashier when John was a toddler (abt 1960). Then at some point she marries, presumably, THE CASINO OWNER, who kindly adopts John as his own. I guess mom knew how to look out for herself. IMHO this sort of sleeping one's way to the top is, well, tacky. But hey - look where it got mom and her kid........John is a notable pretty boy, so I guess his mom must have been the best-looking cashier around.

33. More about the good Senator:
He is lovingly referred to in Nevada as The Hairdo. :spray:

He is famous for being more interested in golfing and working on his tan than serving the people of Nevada. BTW, the tan and that great hair (which I personally knew when it was black) apparently come from his hardy Italian peasant stock (maternal great-grandfather). Google is again our friend, as is ancestry.com.

John was born John Eric Mueller and his mom is a Cipriani, for the genealogy trivia fans out there.

One of his grandmothers was born in Ely, from whence my dad hailed. Who knew?
