Feingold Warns Congress: Oppose ‘George Bush’s War’ Now, Or We’ll ‘Start Owning’ It «

Earlier in the week, the Senate decided to “hold off debating a repeal of the 2002 Iraq war authorization.” Now, it will not debate the war for at least two weeks.

Today on MSNBC, Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), a strong advocate for redeployment from Iraq, urged the Senate to “use the power of the purse” to end the war. He added, “You know what? If the Democrats don’t use their power, when we’re in the majority in both houses, we’re going to start owning this war. It is George Bush’s war, but if we don’t get serious we’re going to start owning this war.” Watch it AT LINK:

Transcript:

I would prefer a clean effort to try to eliminate the funding for the war, to actually have a date like we did with Somalia, where the war will end. But the fact is that when I propose a deadline a year and a half ago, people said well, there’s no support for that, even the Democrats are against it. Well, now it’s in all the drafts.

So, the fact is that people come to the realization that if we’re going to end this war, we’re to have use our real power. The power of the purse. And I can tell from you private conversations, the realization is growing that the only way to stop this thing is to use our power. You know what? If the Democrats don’t use their power, when we’re in the majority in both houses, we’re going to start owning this war. It is George Bush’s war, but if we don’t get serious we’re going to start owning this war.

3. This needs to be hammered home loud and clear!

4. Then, there's the fact that the first action the Democrats achieve
will bring with it their own share of responsibility for the consequences of their legislation -- both political and practical -- whether it be a strident partisan effort or an incremental, bipartisan one.

6. K&R. This is the truth! If the Dems want to pussyfoot around the
election results and the mandate they were given, it will become their war. They have the chance, now, to put an end to this madness. Come 2008, all bets are off the table. Either they have listened to the voice of the people, or, they are the corporate whores we suspect them to be.

9. Each day we fail to stop this war, is a day in which people are killed and wounded
The Vietnam War was a Democratic War, then Nixon was elected as the "peace" candidate and within 6-months Vietnam became his war.
