NY Times editorial: Iran and the Nameless Briefers
Published: February 13, 2007

Before things get any more out of hand, President Bush needs to make his intentions toward Iran clear. And Congress needs to make it clear that this time it will be neither tricked nor bullied into supporting another disastrous war...

...But the officials offered no evidence to support their charge that “the highest levels of the Iranian government” had authorized smuggling these weapons into Iraq for use against American forces. Nor could they adequately explain why they had been sitting on this urgent evidence since 2004. The only thing that was not surprising was the refusal of any of the briefers to allow their names to be published. Mr. Powell is probably wondering why he didn’t insist on the same deal.

1. All the NYT has to do ...
... is name the "briefers" already. Sure, there will be hell to pay, and perhaps even litigation, but that will show that we're sick and tired of being lied to.

2. Present company included, New York Times?
Are YOU going to refuse to be "tricked nor bullied into supporting another disastrous war?" Are YOU going to verify what you're told? Are YOU going to get both side of the story? Are YOU going to tell the whole truth no matter who it hurts? Are YOU going to name names if you find you've been lied to?

3. It's an old trick
A news headline, always front page, is read by more people than an editorial, which is buried in somewhere inside the huge New York Times print edition.

Step 1: Publish false allegations as true.
Step 2: Criticize false allegations in an editorial.
