Guess I won't be listening to Mike Malloy anymore.

Sorry, buster, but no. Normal people don't HAVE that kind of money to throw away. $9.99 a month my ass.

How do you change your screenname?

4. I thought anyone could listen to Malloy live
on the Phoenix progressive radio station.

Is that a no-go?

3. From White Rose
Okay, Truthseekers, listen up. All future archives of The Mike Malloy show will be found at Nova-M radio's web site. I am working with Nova-M to help them create these archives every day, and as of now am working for FREE to help make Nova-M a success. Unlike the Right-wing networks, Nova-M did not start out with a "silver spoon" in its mouth, and paying the salaries for Mike and Kathy and the Phoenix production staff, Ian and Bily are straining the kitty to the maximum.

So, starting this Monday, Nova-M will be charging for access to the archives. Trust me when I tell you that this is not a step taken lightly! This is not some evil corporation trying to pile on the cash, but rather a struggling enterprise trying to survive long enough to be self-sustaining on its ad revenue.

Now, the streams will remain free of charge, and that includes the Ogg Vorbis and Modem streams which White Rose provides. And the historical archives of all of Mikes shows will remain here at White Rose.

Nothing is free in this world, and that includes internet servers and bandwidth! No significant revenues are to be derived from advertisements on streams or podcasts at this point in history, and my experience in raising money for White Rose shows me that pulling in $30,000 in a year in free-will contributions is nearly impossible. So, it has to be done by paid subscription fees. It will cost about 33 cents a day and I really hope you all subscribe. The network needs you.

-Sincerely,
Ben Burch
White Rose Society Webmaster

19. When I stream Thom Hartmann's show at White Rose....
I thank Ben Burch for it.

I only get it on XM on week-ends. I appreciate being able to turn off my radio when Franken gets boring, and listen to Hartmann.

I donate to him for that reason.

8. I gotta agree
If it helps to keep Mike on the air, I am all for it.
We can listen live for free.
We can pay for the pod-casts.

Does Shultz or anyone have a free archive?

If one is technically savvy, one could record the live stream. Although that is probably not legal.

7. 10 a month does seem spendy
I pay 7 a month for Coast to Coast AM but you get a lot for the money. Commercial free edited shows and three months of archives and very good quality audio and show reviews. If Malloy show charges that much they better be offering a good product.

22. You get lots of options
The format of the downloads is commercial free, either high bandwidth (massive, but wonderful sounding) or low, or broken up by hour. Don't think the archives timeout.

And it's not just Malloy's show. Dr. Newcomb as well, and others as they add more hosts.

11. Sorry, but $10/month or even $100/year is way out of line for 2 shows...
They've been watching too much of "The Apprentice". A chance to win $10,000 won't get me to lock my money up for a year on the unstated promises of what's to come.

I don't know who Mike Newcomb is, he may be good, OK, but I'm not paying more for him than I'm paying for all of AAR's shows.

Lower the price, or add Thom Hartmann, and a bunch of others and I'd switch over for the same price.

$100? no way.

13. I just hope they'll lower that unrealistic price...
They're going to price themselves out of business.

And when/if they do lower their price, they'll just piss off those who paid in advance.

They went about this completely ass-backwards. They should have started with like, seriously, $2 a month, had people set up their accounts, etc. They would have been flooded, had people listening, etc. I would have signed up tonight.

Then, with every new show they're promising to have but not naming (and who in their right mind would buy into THAT deal?), they'd add another dollar or so to the subscription price.

$5 a month / $50 a year would have been the ceiling for two shows, but $10/$100 is way off the charts. Again, I think AAR had the subscription figures just about right, and even then I hesitated for a long time...

The ONLY exception to this would have been a LIFETIME subscription of like $300. THAT would have been interesting...

14. If I had Malloy in my DU name, I would be more loyal
about listening to him. Such an act is independent of NovaM's decision to charge for podcasts and one does not have to stay up as late for Mike as we used to.

As for my opinion on this podcast decision, of course I am against it. I believe that a lot of people find Malloy from those archived shows on whiterose. That is how I found Randi, Mike, etc. before Air America was even a known entity.

The business model is the same as Stephanie Miller's, from what I understand. I do not want to reinforce the idea that a company should be rewarded for reducing the availablility of a service to its customers, but at the same time, I wish success to NovaM and any other liberal media network is conceived between now and perpetuity.

16. And just days before this switch, Mike made an on-air plea for $$ for
White Rose, and I sent $$, literally just days ago -- and then was slapped in the face with this.

The timing of that really sucked, and showed some really bad judgement.

21. DIY-Record your own shows...
http://all-streaming-media.com/record-audio-stream/direct-sound-recording.htm

I use a program on the Mac called Wiretap (costs $20) where you can record on a schedule and save as an MP3 file. There are similar apps on the PC.

...or pay the $10 a month...like they say, nothing is free.
