Are you ready for some DASCHLE?

If Johnson can't complete his term or run for re-election in 2008, that is.

3. Daschle is a Dem. The governor of SD is a Republican,
and I doubt he'd appoint Daschle. Don't know whether he'd run in '08.

7. The Governor in SD doesn't "appoint" anyone..
Here is the law in SD:

12-11-1. Special election to fill congressional vacancy--Time of election of representative. If a vacancy occurs in the office of a senator or representative in the United States Congress it shall be the duty of the Governor within ten days of the occurrence, to issue a proclamation setting the date of and calling for a special election for the purpose of filling such vacancy. If either a primary or general election is to be held within six months, an election to fill a vacancy in the office of representative in the United States Congress shall be held in conjunction with that election, otherwise the election shall be held not less than eighty nor more than ninety days after the vacancy occurs.

14. I Know This Is a Stupid Question
But why is the MSM making such a fuss about this if the people get to vote again? I certainly don't know much about SD politics but they do vote for Dems out there.

21. What does this mean then....from the statutes page?
12-11-5. Special election to fill senate vacancy. The special election to fill the vacancy of a senator shall be held at the same time as the next general election. The general election laws shall apply unless inconsistent with this chapter.

Source: SL 1979, ch 99, § 2.

I can't figure this out. But then I don't have to, luckily.

22. it means we are all over the place with the appointment/not appointment thing

and the length of the appointment, and whether there will be a special
election to fill the vacancy, and the timing of that election.

I have read so many different things about this that DU is a source of
complete confusion today (about this one topic) instead of it's usual
reliable information.

4. Let's send our well wishes to Sen. Johnson
and hope for his recovery before speculating on his replacement. From watching/reading CNN, MSNBC, etc, you would think Johnson is already gone.

17. Any chance Daschle grew either a backbone or some cojones during his "retirement"?

8. I believe Tom Daschle
opposed the Iraq war initially then caved.

Kucinich, Byrd, Graham, however--oh, hindsight.

But Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, said the 133 votes against the measure were "a very strong message" to the administration.

"All across this land Americans are insisting on a peaceful resolution of matters in Iraq," he said. "All across this land, Americans are looking towards the United States to be a nation among nations, working through the United Nations to help resolve this crisis."

Sen. Robert Byrd, D-West Virginia, attempted Thursday to mount a filibuster against the resolution but was cut off on a 75 to 25 vote.

Byrd had argued the resolution amounted to a "blank check" for the White House.

Sen. Bob Graham of Florida was one of 21 Senate Democrats voting against the resolution.

"This is the Tonkin Gulf resolution all over again," Byrd said. "Let us stop, look and listen. Let us not give this president or any president unchecked power. Remember the Constitution."

13. Why don't we wait for Johnson to recover first huh?
Oh, and do you live in SD? Are you voting in the special election if it's called?

So you'd rather we lose the Senate?

Nice clear thought.:wtf:

15. If Johnson retires in 2008 then I say that we go with Stephanie!!

Stephanie Herseth is SD's only representative in the house and a democrat to boot!

A woman's place may be in the 'house' but I think Stephanie's place should be in the Senate!

Please don't attack me because I think she looks cute in that picture. I'm sure she has a brain to go with her looks.
