Bobby tried " to see through the eyes of America's casualties"
That's how Jack Newfield described him in the PBS documentary on RFK. To me that is the essence of the type of Liberalism that ought to be embraced by any Presidential candidate worthy of DUers support. There can be principled disagreement on how government can best help America's casualties, but there can be no compromise with the basic concept that society has an obligation to help the dispossessed, the lost and the unfortunate. It also means that no Democrat will be worthy of the Party's nomination who refuses to see through the eyes of the Iraqi people the carnage that we have loosed upon a land that had already endured so much brutality. Confronted with that vision there can be no equivocation and no compromise. Senators with aspirations for higher office need to declare themselves now for an immediate pullout from Iraq. There can be no tepid support for sending any more troops for whatever short period of time. And if Bush and his regime refuse to end this blinder, politicians who deserve to be called Democrats need to be prepared to stop funding the atrocities being committed in the name of the American people. If we lead the American people will follow. If we equivocate, it is not just Iraq that will be lost but the nation's soul as well.
