A devote Catholic all his life, he turned away from his belief that abortion was wrong in order to run in the 2004 Democratic primaries for president and not ruin his cred as a "progressive"...
Back in 1996, we were both on the ticket in a working class neighborhood that was defined more by the dominate parish than by street or secular boundaries...
The Catholic churches were not letting me into their Bingo games to pass out literature, a real source of access to the democratic working class voters in suburban Cleveland….
Time after time, DK vouched for me, even though I was pro-choice, and I was allowed in to meet and great the game players...
I remember this one time when DK wasn't around to defend me...
My opponent, a very vocal "pro-life" republican, had been in office for 16 years and never once did anything to limit the amount of abortions here in the state of Ohio....
Sure, he blustered and bellowed with the best of them, but that "pro-life" posturing never seemed to make it from the campaign literature into the revised code...
So I seized upon that "inconsistency" and asked the pastor of this particular St. "What's her name" what exactly the incumbent had done to stop abortions other than say he was against abortion...
He couldn't answer...
I told him I would do what ever I could to limit the need for abortions but would not compromise my belief that Abortion, in a pluralistic society such as ours, has to be legal and safe for those who do not believe as you do...
He let me pass out my lit...
Message, be reasonable and you may just get a chance to have your voice heard…
