Memo to RNC re: George Allen

There's an article in the Post today about the rise and fall of Felix:

http://tinyurl.com/yyvn7h

I have this fantasy that the RNC will call me, Ms. average female voter in Northern Virginia, to ask why as much as 65% of my demographic voted for Webb. Here's what I'd tell them.

First, your man is a dunce. He makes George Bush look like Socrates and Einstein combined, with the oratory skills of Winston Churchill.

As for what went wrong with Allen's campaign, it boiled down to mixed, confusing images. There was the image that Allen has cultivated, since he was governor, of the good old boy Confederate. That backfired spectacularly when he had his Macaca moment: the image that emerged then was of Allen being just one white sheet short of the KKK.

Second, there was his cowboy image. Cowboy. In Virginia. Helloooo. We have gentleman farmers and horsemen here, not cowboys, not even faux cowboys a la Bush. This made him seem one yeehaw short of looking as ridiculous as the Jon Voight character in Midnight Cowboy.

Third, the alpha male football player image. That resonates with men, but with women? Not so much.

The one image we did not see during the campaign was the one that really mattered. Allen as senator, as policy maker. Where the hell was he? Okay, he hid it for good reason: his record was at best mediocre and undistinguished. But none of the compensating images he tried to project served him well.

2. He makes George Bush look like Socrates and Einstein ....
combined

Felix's problem is that Virginia is changing, and the 'pubbies are not changing with it. The yahoos in the southern part of the state don't have the political muscle that they used to. Northern Virginia, vastly wealthier, vastly better educated, now wields great political power, and it will all come crashing down on them within the next five years. I believe that if Virginia does not go blue during the next Presidential cycle, it most certainly will in 2012. Northern Virginians are tired of getting the big screw you from the legislature, which loves to concentrate on wedge issues while ignoring the real problems in the state, such as transportation. It's going to come back to haunt them real soon.

3. amazing fact
I read the other day that No. Va. has grown by 400,000 people (!) since the year 2000. And the state's wealth and economic machinery are concentrated here. They can't ignore us anymore.

7. One of the best ironies ever, only in Washington...
Jim Moran will now be Tom DeLay's Congressman, one of the bluest of the blue districts in Virginia!!!
