so I won't be disappointed, angry, ready-to-move-to-Canada, etc., on Nov. 8. It would be great to see all of America rise up and in one voice scream "F-U-G-O-P! next Tuesday, but we still have some 35% of our population addicted to the kool-aide and who only crawl out from under their rocks for a refill now and then.
Here's my two-cents-worth of silver-lining for Tuesday: The Dems take back the house (they've got to do at least that much, or I really will move to Canada!), and we make some gains in the Senate, just not enough to retake it. There will be gridlock for the next two years no matter what happens (unless the GOP keep majorities all around, and I won't care then because I'll be in Canada!), but with Dem control of only one chamber, the general public won't have such high expectations for change. If we were to pull off a sweep, a lot of folks will expect the six-year mess of a corrupt, incompetent administration and their do-nothing, rubber-stamping congress to be cleaned up in just two years. And we would be expected to accomplish this miracle with the slimmest of majorities and with the same corrupt, incompetent bunch in the White House. Even with veto-proof majorities, or better still a Dem in the White House, I'm afraid it's going to take many years, even decades, to clean up the mess this bunch has made.
It's hard to imagine how our country, and our world, can endure two more years like the last six. But even if Dems sweep both houses and begin the impeachment process on the first day of the new term in January, its going to take a while just to turn this ship around, let alone get her back on course and back to where she was six years ago. This year's mid-terms can still be the beginning of change, the starting point when the pendulum begins to swing the other way. A Dem-held House will give us a voice that that will be much harder for the press and public to suppress or ignore. A GOP-held Senate can help keep the level of dissatisfaction and anger high. And we will be in much better shape to make some real changes, including the White House, in 2008.
All that being said, I still hope the Dems win every race in the country! And if we do better than I expect, I'll be very happy indeed, which beats the hell out of being dissapointed by not meeting my expectations (I've had too much of that lately, thank you!) But if we only take the House and make modest gains in the Senate, I can live with that... for now.
