TX Paper Prints Impeachment Column

Alan Northcutt, guest column: Time to mention the forbidden "I" word

Waco Tribune

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism. — Thomas Jefferson

A growing number of Americans now believe that true patriots will defend Democracy, the Constitution and the rule of law against a president who is violating these principles.

Thus U.S. House Resolution 635, calling for a select committee to investigate grounds for impeachment of George W. Bush, has 37 sponsors.

State legislatures, which may present charges directly to the U.S. House, have pending resolutions in Illinois, California and Vermont.

snip//

The grounds for the impeachment process are solid and certainly more substantial in terms of “high crimes and misdemeanors” than those of the recent impeachment of Bill Clinton for issues of his personal life.

The country cannot wait for the end of Bush’s term. Impeachment proceedings must begin for the head of this lawless regime in order to restore the rule of law and replace endless war with diplomacy.

3. Woo hoo!!! And *when*
are people gonna get the attribution of that quote right?
It's not Jefferson. It's Zinn.

(Doesn't this newspaper have a fact checker?)

That said, hooray for them for printing it, and Mr. Northcutt for writing it!!!!!

13. What Jefferson DID say.....
Of course, our third President didn't say that dissent is the highest form of patriotism.. what he did say was:

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Not different in sentiment... but grittier.

19. Hey Southern Liberal!
Welcome to DU! :hi:

Yep, Jefferson was even blunter. Probably why *that* one doesn't get quoted as often. ;)

Oh, and do you notice that when *that* one is quoted, the "tyrants" part often gets left out.....?!

14. Here's another good link for you in correcting the attribution error
http://www.monticello.org/library/reference/spurious.html

I've been guilty of it myself, sad to say, and I'm such a stickler for accuracy. I hang my head.

20. Hey, it's floating around
with Jefferson's name on it much more than with Zinn's. I don't even remember why I got curious about it.

7. What do you expect?
Rove's strategy includes inciting the base with fear of impeachment of their hero.

15. It's right there in the OP
State legislatures, which may present charges directly to the U.S. House, have pending resolutions in Illinois, California and Vermont.

All "Pending" so far; until and unless one passes, it's just wind. Once one passes, it MUST be brought to the floor of the US House of Representatives.

21. Forgive me for being bitter...
but Oklahoma does not have a Democratic Senator. We have Tom freakin' Coburn and some other guy equally as revolting. I don't see how writing to either of them is going to do me any good. The US representative from my district of Oklahoma is as worthless to me as the other two.
God, getting anything done in this state is hopeless, unless its on the local level.
