Bush Works To Ease Turbulence With Pakistan

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush worked Friday to smooth relations with Pakistan after reports about alleged U.S. threats of military action there to counter al-Qaida militants.

In an interview to air Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan said former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage told a Pakistani official that the United States could attack Pakistan if it didn't back the war on terrorism.

The Pakistani leader also said that during morning talks he explained to Bush about deals signed with tribal leaders who are "honor bound" to make sure there's no Taliban or al-Qaida activity in their areas.

"The deal is not at all with the Taliban. This deal is against the Taliban. This deal is with the tribal elders," Musharaff said.

"I believe him," Bush said, adding that Musharaff had looked him in the eye and vowed that "the tribal deal is intended to reject the Talibanization of the people and that there won't be a Taliban and there wont be al-Qaida (in Pakistan)."
