Sticking to his guns, Cheney easily rallies troops

BY TIM ELFRINK

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITERS

Vice President Dick Cheney drew cheers from Offutt Air Force Base troops Tuesday, declaring that the United States would triumph in the war against terrorism.

"The war on terror is a battle for the future of civilization. It's a battle worth fighting. It's a battle we're going to win," Cheney said.

In a half-hour speech, delivered from a podium at the base of a Minuteman missile outside U.S. Strategic Command headquarters, Cheney thanked audience members for their service.

"I'm here today because the president and I want you to know how much we appreciate everything you do on behalf of the United States. You're serving in an eventful time for our country and in the cause of freedom," he said.

Cheney said U.S. forces would remain in Iraq and Afghanistan as long as necessary. He stressed the military's prominent role in combating terrorism and called Iraq a "central front" in that struggle.

Democrats looking to retreat? How the hell is a 6 - month withdrawl a retreat when the Iraqis are suppose to take over their own country? Isn't that the plan? Are we suppose to stay there forever? If you want to go after terrorism, work with the rest of the world and get out of Iraq.

Too bad cheney's parents didn't do an early withdrawl so this crooked-faced-war monger bastard wouldn't be here today.

of course I'd prefer a war crimes trial before his execution, but I ain't that picky

3. "easily rallies troops"? Well, no shit. For one thing,
they are required to not only attend but to give him a warm reception. They aren't allowed to think.

And, besides, part of the reason they are so happy is because they aren't in Iraq.

6. He panders to these guys, tells them they're all that stands
between us and chaos, death, destruction, and doom. And they eat it up not thinking about the fact that what they are trained for is chaos, death, destruction, and doom. Or that they should NEVER be called upon except for the most legitimate reasons. For self-defense. For protecting the weak from an 'evil' agressor nation. AND THAT WE ARE NOW THAT EVIL AGRESSOR NATION. That the administration they are so willing to fight for, who they so willingly/gladly applaud, are nothing more than lying thugs who will stop at nothing to line their pockets and build up their already inflated egos.

I'm starting to feel about the military like I did when I was very young and they were killing Vietnamese people indescriminately and justifying it by that famous mantra "we were just following orders".

7. Now it's the commanders who will decide to withdraw the troops?
I thought that was up to The Decider, and he had decided that the troops would stay put for at least the remainder of his time in office. Why is Dick Cheney contradicting the Commander in Chief? Doesn't that appearance of a divided leadership play into the hands of Al Qaeda? Aren't the terrorists encouraged to know that the President says one thing, and the Vice President says something completely different about troop postings? Why does Dick Cheney hate America so much?

8. Follow the guy with Five military Deferments?
Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 12:20 PM by SpiralHawk
No thank you.

When Dick Cheney got five deferments because, in his own words, he had "other priorities" and then started send our kids off to far away lands to boost profits for his oil cronies, he lost me.
