Peter Schweizer Lied About Gore and Kossacks Were Fooled,
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 12:57 PM by Uncle Joe
a diary by stardate at Daily Kos. Please click on link for full comments.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/8/17/185225/912

Recently there was a diary quoting the trash written by the wingnut Peter Schweitzer. The trash supposedly proves that Gore is a hypocrite that he owns Oxy stocks, that Paramount paid for his carbon offsets that he receives royalties from a zinc mine etc.
• stardate's diary :: ::

But none of that tirade is true. And many kossacks, instead of asking where from the hell Schweitzer got those "facts" jumped to conclusion and called Gore a hypocrite themselves.
Well, belatedly, Gore responded and so did David Roberts from GRIST Magazin.

All those here who accused Gore of not walking the walk should apologize and contact both the USA Today and that asshole Schweitzer, demanding correction. And not just on Page 10A as the USA Today did but in a way that will reach the people who heard or read the original lies.
Gore's office responds to USA Today hit piece

The assertion by author Peter Schweizer that the Gores were swimming in Occidental stock is also off base. At Mr. Gore's request, all of his father's stock in Occidental (Oxy) Petroleum was sold almost six years ago as the estate was closed.

Peter Schweitzer, Al Gore, and hypocrisy
First things first: I talked to some of Gore's people today, including Kreider, about the specific charges. Suffice to say, they're false. Gore receives no royalties from the mine, which shut down in 2003. (USA Today actually printed a correction about this, way down on page 10A.) Gore owns no stock in Occidental, and never has (his father did; it was all sold over six years ago). Gore does in fact take advantage of the green power options his utility offers, and was in the process of adding photovoltaic solar cells to his house when the article came out. He pays for his own personal carbon offsets, in addition to the institutional offsets purchased by Paramount (movie distributor) and Rodale (book publisher), which make both the book and the movie completely carbon neutral.

Of course USA Today buried the correction on page 10
I believe they should apologize on the front page.

5. I guess we should be grateful they acknowledged they were wrong
but you're right. They should acknowledge all their mistakes on the front page otherwise, as you intimated, people won't take notice.

2. It's disgusting that so many who call themselves Dems believe any meme set
forth by the RW hit squad. GOP operatives have worked for decades planting lies against great Dems into the left circles so they can be attacked from both sides.

Too bad so many Dems jump to believe the lies instead of finding out the facts first BEFORE they spread false stories.

6. It's a real problem, agreed
Of course it isn't only the far left circles that fall victim to it, I've seen the Lieberman types jump on some pretty absurd bandwagons too. But it's definitely a problem and one Republicans don't seem to have. Their people are caught on tape and their supporters still find ways to excuse them.

3. This makes my blood boil . . .
They just make shit up and everybody swallows it, and when it's proved to be a pack of lies, the offending publication *might* print a tiny retraction in the back pages with the relationship ads.

Fuckwads.

4. I see it that kind of thing often
Someone quotes a less than reliable sourse, or doesn't quote a source at all, while making a claim about someone or something, then everyone piles on without questioning it.
